my husband birthday is coming up. at first, started out asking a few neighbor friends if they wanted to get together for dinner and drinks. about 6 of us. when i asked his friend at work if there were a few of them who wanted to meet, it turned into 10-15 people. so we are looking at about 20 people. i was thinking small, small budget. now it's big. buffet for 25 people is $20 a head. i don't want to go broke for this. we are leaving for disney a few days later, then xmas...etc. i was thinking i'd bring a cake, order a bunch of appetizers, let people order their own drinks. is that cheap? i think i could go broke if i paid for drinks too. thoughts???

Tell them it's pot luck party and have them bring something. That way you don't go broke. Some people don't like pot luck and probably won't show anyway. Have a good party and good luck :)

Since the size of the group greatly expanded, have something at home instead. It's much more relaxed, everyone can talk to the birthday boy and you can save a bundle even if you had a few appetizer platters made up for you. Put out some basics for drinks and drink set ups and have some fun with decorating. I think everyone will enjoy it so much more and you won't be paying the big bucks for it all.

Hey this is an adult party you do not have to break the bank. Tell everyone where the dinner is and let them know they are paying for their own meal - make a joke out of it say "Fred is looking into his retirement at his age so you 'll have to buy your own meal! ha ha" You could also say no gifts are needed. I suggest going back to your home for cake and you can have a bottle or two of champagne (or wine or whatever).

I just went through basically the same thing for my husbands party and believe me every person understands you can't fork out 400.00 for a birthday!

Make it a BBQ potluck. Those are least expensive. if you are going to a restaurant, then bonton states it is best to pay for everything.

Sorry!

Yes, just don't pay for their drinks.
