I answered a question yesterday on why dogs howl with a memory of my daft Basset who had a bout of howling down drain pipes. Any one out there with fond memories to share about this lovable breed?

My Rainbow was a cookie hound, and very determined and clever when it came to getting what she wanted.

At the grooming shop where I used to work, we had two counters in the front with a door between them to let the clients in and out. We kept a basket of cookies on the counter, and Rainbow was determined to get them.

First she simply put her front paws on the counter and pulled the basket off. So we moved the basket out of her reach.

Then she started climbing on to the desk chair, then on the desk, and from there to the counter, then walked across the counter to the basket. So we started pushing the chair in so she couldn't use it to get onto the desk.

She started pushing the chair back out. We had to move it away from the desk entirely. But that didn't stop her from trying:

Then she went to the end of the other counter, climbed up the crates that were there so she could get onto that counter, then walked across the top of the door to the counter with the cookies.

We gave up......

I live in a very large apartment complex. I'm ALWAYS out walking Sampson (aka the most beautiful basset hound in the whole wide world). EVERYONE there remembers his name. No one remembers my name. He's Mr. Personality. Everyone says how he makes them feel so very special because even if he's never seen them before, he runs up to them to greet them like he's been waiting on only their return forever.

And there's nothing like finding a big dry blob of slobber on your leg (or anywhere else on your person). Obviously it's been there for some time because it's had time to dry.
