My brother was deported sometime in early 2005. We have just recieved some papers saying that he is being sued because of a laptop he was paying for through Best Buy. Well he now lives in mexico and couldnt pay for it anymore. What can he do about this?

You are under no obligation to pay your brothers debts. Send the collection agency his address in Mexico.

The collection agency has no authority to collect outside of the US. They will just have to write it off as a loss.

Nothing. He can file an answer to the Complaint, and state that he is in Mexico, but it wouldn't do any good. It will just go to collections and sit there forever. No action will be taken. You can inform the attorney for Best Buy that he's been deported and they will probably drop the complaint or let it ride but do nothing further. It will just be a mark on his credit in the US.

Just let them sue him. He will not be able to go to court since he is in Mexico and he cant be held liable since he was deported from the country. All his debts in the US would not mean anything in Mexico since the credit doesn't transfer over there.

He could pay the balance owed for the computer.

Since he isn't going to be able to show up in court, the collector will get a default judgment. If you brother has any assets in this country, they will be able to attach them. Otherwise, that judgment will just sit and wait for you brother to return to this country.

Well I do not think that he can be served being he is Mexico, but maybe he should pay for it anyway.

You don't have to do anything. Since he's not here there's nothing they can do to collect the judgment.
