My company doesn’t have a policy against inner office dating, which is great because I’ve been wanting to ask out the CEO’s personal assistant for the longest time. Well, we finally went on our first date this weekend, but both of us drank WAY more than we should have and as a result we ended up sleeping together. I felt really bad about it since it was our first date and didn’t feel comfortable staying the night, so I lied and told her I had an early morning meeting. She looked really pissed, but then she also gave me this look like “you’re an idiot!” Now, I can understand her being pissed, but why would she look at me like I’m an idiot?

She was probably expecting a demonstration of a wonderful round house kick - and you denied her -- for shame for shame

Because she thinks you were only after her for sex. You need to go to her and explain that you didn't feel comfortable staying the night but that you are interested in her and in seeing her again. Tell her that you felt bad about how the first date ended.

And if she agrees to a second date, I'd lay off the alcohol and keep it at a kiss at the door and nothing more.

Office relationships can and do work (I married the man I met at work, and we worked together for a year while we dated), but you need to take them very slowly, and you need to lay off telling your coworkers anything about the relationship, because that just fuels office gossip.

This is still salvageable, but you need to be a grown-up about it and admit that the first date went too far and you wished that it hadn't because you've liked her for a while and want to get to know her better. Good luck!

She probably feels terrible. If you truly like her, you should sit down and talk about it. It would be too bad to ruin a potential relationship just because you're intimidated by an awkward situation.

Even if you don't like her, you should still try to smooth things over. Even if for no other reason than, as the CEO's PA, she might be able to make your job hard.

Next time stay in a public place so you aren't tempted.

Probably because, if she works in the same office as you, she knew you didn't have a meeting and that you were lying. That's a silly thing to try to lie about. See why most companies have a policy? You need to try to talk to her just to smooth things out if you want to maintain a harmonious working environment. You've insulted her intelligence and hurt her feelings, and the secretary has a lot of influence with her supervisor.

Because you were an idiot. You should have just stayed until morning. She knew you were lying. What's the big deal? You slept together so what? You are both adults. You could have stayed till morning, had breakfast together and maybe had a great second date right there.

If she is the CEO's assistant I can gaurantee you she knows everything that goes on in that office. If you were trying to bluff your way out of staying the night for an early meeting, she knows you were lying. That's why she thinks you are an idiot. If you really want another chance to redeem yourself.. how about asking her out again for chinese food and no alcohol?

well inner office dating is great and all but it does get reallly complicated, it creates drama. and the last thing you need at work is drama. and i think the reason she gave you that look is because she knew that you BOTH made a mistake, spending the night- and so she just gave you the look. it's a bad idea to date work members because it could get distracting for both of you and make you loose that comfortable work relationship and you need your space, you could also loose eachother's trust. so for now try to stay away from former employees, the office doesnt make for good relationships.

I met my current wife at my work. I courted her friendship and after that her love for more than 2 years with help from a little mutual lady friend that was a fan of us getting together.
I have never been happier and this is my 3rd marriage.
HOWEVER........I have dated work friends in the past and had it turn out kind of awkward like you describe. I even got invited over to "Fix her AC" by my young attractive boss once.
Blond Janet....very cute.
I know she wanted me and to be honest I wanted her too but I just couldn't do it. Why? Certainly not because I got all faithful to my wife all of the sudden.
I couldn't do it because I saw all the possible problems that might arise in my mind's eye just as she was coming on to me in her bedroom. I sidestepped her advances by getting all busy working on her AC problem rather than just hanging out in her bedroom talking and flirting. I didn't openly reject her. That would have been a mistake too. I just did what I had come there to do as I talked with her all friendly and making jokes to lessen the tension and didn't let her draw me in. She probably still could have hasd me if she had really wanted me but I would have made her work for it and make it obvious, which then would have put me back in charge. hey she was already my boss. I couldn't let her have even still more power over me.
Usually this sort of thing results in someone losing their job.
I didn't want to lose mine. Then a few months later she met someone and they got married and I was able to look this large man in the eyes at their wedding and not feel guilty.

Well because she is the CEO's personal assistant and knows you do not have a early morning meeting. Or, maybe she feels like you used her for sex only and have no intention of dating her again.

The answer to your first question is to avoid bad feelings at work and the potential of favoritism or nepotism. It is possible to have a bad date with someone outside your company. To have a bad date with your boss brings a whole line of other problems with morale at work.

I dont know the answer to your last question. Is it possible that she can see something in person?

"Early morning meeting" is the oldest BS excuse in the book.

If she was looking at you like you're an idiot, she was justified because only an idiot would give that excuse.

You should have just stayed the night (comfortable or not) and then discussed it the next day.
