Get the fish fixed. There's a terrible overpopulation of fish! LOL

We have 70 rabbits, a black lab (female), a shih tzu (male) and not a one of them is fixed.

Our website often gets visits from animal rights activists who complain that we breed rabbits. Well as long as I have a market for them, who cares. They often state the world is overpopulated with rabbits and doesn't need any more. My reply is usually, great then we can solve the world hunger problem at the same time we fix the rabbit overpopulation!

Well, it definitely is to help control the pet population so that thousands of unwanted puppies and kittens don't get put to sleep each year. I personally think that getting your animals fixed is the responsible thing to do, and I have a male bulldog who is neutered. Also, I think it is important to get your animal fixed because especially male dogs will start getting aggressive a lot of the time when they become sexually mature, and it can pose a threat to houseguests or other people. I noticed most of your pets are fixed. Is there some reason why you chose not to neuter your male pit bull, or have you just not gotten around to it yet?

If you have never worked with any shelters, pounds or rescue mission & saw how many dogs are euthanized daily you wouldn't be asking this question. There is an over population of dogs all over the world cause my too many people breeding their pets, puppy mills & ignorant breeders.

There are many pure breeds (pet quality though) being killed each day cause more & more dogs are rescued, picked up by animal control, turned in by owners & they are being killed by the hundreds & possibly thousands each & evey day of the week.

If people would just spay/neuter their pets to prevent the possibe breeding of these dogs the over population may subside. I think it is important to spay & neuter all pets. The general public knows nothing about breeding dogs. They screw up the genetics big time & make puppies that are nothing but a messed pool of genetic with many many faults. Then they call them pure breeds when they are nothing but a bundle of faults.

I even had a couple of Angora Goats spayed & the buck kids had their nuts removed.

I have always wanted to get a Quality Pure Breed Female Doberman. But I have spent my life rescuing dogs that I have found wander the streets, or adoped from rescue places. I even had a few given to me by the rescue places cause I they did not have the room for the very large dogs (2 Great Danes & a couple of Airedales).

Doing my best to help the situation. I have had all my dogs & cats spayed/neutered at 4 months of age. I am down to two dogs now but there were times when I had more than the county allowed so I had to hid them. Luckily I have a half acre to do this on.

To me & my family it is very very very important to get all the pets spayed & neutered. My mom is over run by cats (17), she has spent a fortune on getting any new cats spayed &/or neutered & she thinks that she may have paid to have neighborhood cats fixed cause the disappear shortly after they are fixed.

This is why I am so against not spaying or neutering pets. They are just pets & aren't going produce quality pups, kittens. So spay & neuter your pets.

I have a female German Shepherd (2 yr old) that is a beautifu dog but she is full of faults from a back yard breeder & she has many faults. The other is a Chow X that is very old & has had skin problems all of his life. He came to me in a litter of puppies that one of my grooming clients brought to me cause they found the pups (6) & no mama to be found. I raised all 6 from birth & he is the only one left. All 6 were spayed & neutered at 4 months.

Sorry for rattling on & on but to me spaying & neutering pets is very crutial.

Most of the people who are preaching at you to neuter and spay do have their animals fixed. It's just common sense and responsible pet ownership. Not only does it control the pet population, it also reduces some cancers in both males and females. It just makes sense. There are no disadvantages. You mentioned breeders, but of course they don't neuter and spay. They have to create more and more animals so they can contribute to the pet population problem and line their pockets. Get your animals from shelters everyone.

Its just sad that people dont fix their animals (outdoor cats especially), then an animal gets pregnant and there are MORE cats or dogs that need homes on top of the millions that are in our animal shelters for that exact reason. Obvisouly breeders wouldnt fix their pets, because thats their business and they are regulating when they breed their pets, and also taking care of the puppies/cats, rather than them going to shelters or ending up stray.

I am not entirely sure I understand your question. If you are asking why most people neuter or spay their animals, and why other people tell them to, then that is what I am answering.

Most people have their animals sterilized for population control. There are already so many unwanted dogs and cats in the world that don't ever find homes it seems selfish to allow your pets to breed.

There are other medical reasons though. Neutering a dog or cat can lesson his chance of having testicular cancer, prostate problems and it can help him not be aggressive.

In females the ones that are spayed are less likely to have cancer, abdominal tumors, stops them from going into heat monthly and can help with agressiveness.

The responsibile decision is to spay/neuter all your pets.

Because it is the responsible thing to do. Because when you have worked in shelters and with rescue groups long enough to see the horrors inflicted on dogs by humans, the suffering of a puppy mill brood *****, or the sweet trusting faces & wagging tails of those who have no clue that they are living their last day and that they are about to be euthanized because nobody came to claim or adopt them - when you have seen all that enough times, it is unthinkable not to advocate spay & neuter. HOWEVER, I have learned something especially since I've been here at YA - some people are just ignorant and no amount of information or education is ever going to change them. Their animals will continue to remain intact and they will continue to allow their pets to breed without any care or concern about the millions who will die unwanted.

Yes I do tell most people to have thier dogs "fixed" because if they are not a "Real Breeder" then they have no buisness creating more pets for shelter & resuces to find homes for!!

I do Breed but my dogs that I breed are show dogs of High Quality and they are all Titled & Health tested before any litters!

I do resuce and all my rescues are fixed as soon as they are healthy enough & always done before they are rehomed.

As for my Pets they are all "fixed"

Actually, most of us do have our pets fixed. Even the breeders among us (and I am not one of them) have rescue dogs that they know are not breeding quality and they have them fixed.

I volunteer for an animal shelter. I have worked in kill shelters. I know what happens to unwanted animals and it is not pretty. I have every right in the world to attempt to educate other people to sterilize their animals so that they don't continue to contribute to a problem that costs tons of money and slaughters innocent animals. So when you're here, or anyplace else that I am, you will hear me ask people to 'fix' their pets.

I love the breed of dog I chose (papillon). While I do not breed my dog, I don't want others to ruin the breed by breeding low-quality examples. I hate seeing poorly bred dogs. Therefore, I believe that they should spay/neuter their dogs so no "accidents" happen.

My dog is spayed. She came from excellent bloodlines, but is a mismark. Therefore, that quality should not be passed on. She came from a reputable breeder with a spay/neuter contract for that reason (the mismark).

I also don't think people need to breed animals they wont' be responsible for, then these animals end up in shelters and it isn't fair to the animals, they didn't ask to be abandoned.

Not to mention that animals are generally healthier in their senior years when spayed/neutered. Even reputable breeders spay their females once they are done using them for their breeding program.
