Christmas is a religious holiday. It is also about the gift of giving? Even if it is just giving someone a nice hug or something thoughtful. How did Christmas turn into a thing of money. People base it on how much someone spends on them. How much they get. How expensive the items are. Why can people not be happy with one simple item. I would rather someone give me one blanket that they made for me rather than a $7,500 name brand blanket! Why does Christmas have to do with money so much rather than the thought?

Because most people worship money instead of the the real reason for CHRISTmas - Jesus.

Christmas in its literal meaning is about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ and the three wise men that came bearing gifts. Hence the giving tradition. In current times and society, the tradition has lost its meaning and big businesses have commercialized everything! So now it's all about who got what and who's going to get what. In some cases, you are judged by what you give! I always follow the rule, I give what I can based on what I can afford. Yes, "hints" help as to what a person wants, but that doesn't mean they'll get it. There shouldn't be a price tag on Christmas. If people were taught right, they should not expect gifts rather, be happy if they get a card or have you as a friend.

It's commercialism. But don't let that get to you about enjoying the season. Jesus was born, and then automatically, we started celebrating his birthday every December? Didn't quite happen that way. It took years for this holiday to develop. It started as a simple play in a church in Germany many years ago celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. The play got bigger as the years went on. Originally this play was on December 24.

There is also the Santa Claus factor. St Nicholas did exist and did give gifts to children in his village. This did not happen on December 25, most likely around the 2nd. Word got out about his generosity, and, as we well know, legends developed. You can thank Coca-Cola for putting him in the red and white suit.

Somewhere down the road, two traditions collided, and now we have the Christmas holiday that we try to enjoy. Some believe it to be strictly a religious holiday, and that's fine. Some believe in other traditions. My family has it's own way of celebrating Christmas, just as many other families do. We recognize Jesus Christ, but we also enjoy giving gifts out of generosity, and not expecting anything in return. They are two separate issues with Christmas, and don't feel bad about enjoying all facets about Christmas.

God Bless

the giving of gifts comes from the Bible. When the wise men came to worship our Lord, they brought him gifts. You are right, you do not have to give someone a store bought gift. In some countries of the world, they don't do that on Christmas. Money comes in because of Satan. The Lord said that the love of money is the root of all evil. Satan is the king of everything evil, he always turns someones good intentions into evil ones.

I hope that you remember the real reason why we celebrate Christmas, and find Him, if you haven't already. I know that He lives and that He is the real reason we celebrate Christmas, even though it started as a pagan celebration, before Rome embraced Christianity. Take moment this holiday season to read the story in Luke, attend chruch and come unto Him.

I think it does have to do with the thought. People love giving each other gifts, and just like everything else we do, we go over the top. At least at Christmastime, people are going over the top in being nice to each other for a change.

I blame it on greedy human nature, and how it really seems to jump out of us Americans. We always want the biggest and the best. Some want it more than others, and some are content with less, but defiantly the majority wants more.

It's about celebrating Christ's birthday. Since we can't literally give him gifts, we give them to each other.

America isn't all that thoughtful nowadays

Well, Jesus didn't do it. People make it that way. Retailers do it too, they want people to spend more so that they can get their profits..
