She is uncomfortable due to her injured paw. Okay, she has a big belly, ummm, are her nipples protruding? Can you feel movement in her belly? I just don't know! A distended belly could also be worms. When you take her to the vet, he/she should be able to tell you. I hope and pray that she is not pregnant and that she is just fat from being fed and cared for. If you and your family decide to keep her, PLEASE have her spayed as soon as possible to prevent unwanted puppies.
Thank you and your family for taking care of this poor injured dog. She loves you for it!
Good Luck!

Well sometimes there are not actual vet records available. When you adopt an animal from a shelter or some rescues unless they preformed the spay they do not often have these records. We had a foster cat once that when we picked up from the shelter they told us she was spayed and her foster papers said spayed female DSH. Never having experianced cats in season (different than dogs) when I saw blood in her litter box we took her in and suprise not spayed. The shelter paid for her spay and no pregnancy (all males were neutered) but it happened. If a shelter gives you papers saying an animal is altered most people would not question it nor would they demand records knowing often shelters do not have records. What happened to us does happen more than you would think although I also belive that if people pay attention to an animal and have other altered animals that a missed spay should not become a pregnancy and if it does an emergancy spay is in order. I agree that getting a dog from a person warrents proof of spay but again shelters do not always have documents proving the procedure many go off what they are told when an animal is dropped off and while they should check. Small scaring, scar for another proceudre and sheer volume of animals leads to some falling through the cracks.

Well, it makes me wonder if the dog might have some type of intestinal parasite. I know with some worms that dogs get, they look bloated. And yes, she could possibly be pregnant. If she has been homeless, who knows what stud she found. :) Anyway, is she wanting to be alone at all? Is she taking any pillows/stuffed animals and hiding them? I'm not trying to be stupid, but I just know that some pregnant dogs do things like that, and that is a sign of pregnancy. Well, good luck, and I would take her to the vet ASAP. She could possibly have a microchip. It's worth a try.

It is good that you took the dog in.
Nipple growth is a good indicator that your *****'s body is going through pregnancy changes. The nipples of an unbred female are usually quite small, and the area immediately beneath them will feel flat.
But vet will easily tell you if she is pregnant or not.

if she has a rounded belly and more defined nipples, it is very possible. if her hips are wide along with her belly, she could be big because she has been spayed. if she has been spayed, there will be a scar just below her navel that will feel like ridges under her skin if you run your finger along the scar. worms can also cause the stomach to appear bloated. when she lays on her side, her side that is facing up will seem rounded if she is far enough along in the pregnancy. it is really hard for me to tell without seeing her.

I doubt that a stray dog would be overweight. If it has a big belly, it could be pregnant or it could have worms.
Here is a video of my dog Sage when she was pregnant, is your stray fat like she was?

If it looks like that, then she is most likely pregnant.
You shouldn't give the puppies to a shelter, unless its a no kill one.

There is no way for us to be able to tell over the internet, but the vet will be able to tell you.
