For many people, these are separate issues. However, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops has its own campaign to end the death penalty, following the least of Pope John Paul and Pope Benedict.
You can find out more about it at
http://www.usccb.org/sdwp/national/deathpenalty/
In any case, many people are asking themselves whether a system that doesn't prevent or reduce crime and risks executions of innocent people can be consistent with their own moral and religious beliefs.

No , in Exodus 21:12 " He that smiteth a man so that he die shall be surley be put to death ". If there is solid evidence or DNA evidence it's Hostalaveesta Baby ! It also says in Proverbs 28:17 " A man that doeth violence to the blood of any person shall flee to the pit ;( Hell ) let no man stay him " Ecclesiastes 8:11 " Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily , therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil ". That is why the world is getting so violent and evil today , men see that they will just spend their life behind bars will kill who ever they want and kill in prison also . The lawyers are bringing the justice system down with all the stay of execution and life sentences . An older man in church stated " In the old days you would never commit a murder because you know the electric chair was waiting for you ". Also we have to pay to keep the murders alive . Make any sense ??

First of all, I am a christian but my point of view on both subjects has nothing to do with my religion. It has to do with common sense.
Abortion- If you are not ready to have a baby then you are not ready to have sex. People need to start taking responsibility for their own actions. That's why this world is so crappy because people have stopped taking responsibility. I got pregnant when I was 16 want to know where that boy is. He is nine and at school. I am so very proud of that boy. Now that's not to say that some people ended up pregnant without doing anything wrong, such as rape. However, it is called adoption and it is a wonderful thing.
Death Penalty- again this has to do with taking responsibility for your own actions. It is a consequence of a crime you have committed willingly and knowing that you were wrong. I can't put it in any simpler terms than that.
Funny how some people don't like the idea of using common sense.

As a Christian, I am. However, I draw a distinction between the life of an innocent baby whose sole crime is that it is inconvenient for the mother, who should have taken precautions agaist pregnancy if it was an issue, and the life of a convicted criminal.
As an American, I would be less supportive of the death penalty if our prisons weren't so interested inthe comfort of the prisoners. I do not support the idea of a prisoner for life being given access to TV, exercise equipment, magazines, and self-improvement programs. He should be in an eight by eight box, 2000 calories a day, and - maybe - an hour of exercise. There is no reason to be spending $100,000 a year per prisoner to incarcerate them. In the light of this calculus, there is an argument for the death penalty over life in prison. Either way we are not punishing the offender, we are merely removing him from the society to which he has been proven dangerous. I have little pity for him either way.
If such a place still existed, I would be in favor of exiling such people for life to a prison colony.
ReeRee, killing in self-defense is always justified. You should do a little search for the Nick Berg beheading video. You might be next.

Yes. Unfortunately there's not yet a solution for the problem of the death penalty. But there is a very simple solution to abortion - have the baby. Give him or her up for adoption if you can't raise him or her yourself.
Edit: To everyone who says "an eye for an eye", that was an Old Testament law. Jesus laid down the new covenant - "You have heard it said 'an eye for an eye', but I tell you to love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you".

This question has been answered numerous times, however, I will try and answer it one more time - and my thoughts have not changed. I am a Christian- and abortion is wrong. The death penalty is a difficult thing, I agree, however, let us look at it this way- abortion takes the life of a innocent baby, who has no choice, has not done anything to deserve death,. Death penalty is for those who have been convicted or horrible murder- totally different. Read the whole bible and you will see where God actually says it is ok, to take a life and when it is not. What has that baby done, he/she did not even asked to be conceived- a person on death row, committed a crime- a horrible crime.

These are two totally different issues. One is about an unborn child that doesn't get to decide whether or not they get to even have a life (either to live well or not).
The second is about someone who has had the opportunity to have a life and made some bad decisions that has put them in the predicament they are now in, as well as negatively affect others that were harmed by those decisions. (Murder, rape, beatings, etc. . . . . )
The unborn child has harmed no one and adoption is perfectly acceptable and legal.
I am glad that I will not have to make either decision as it is hard to say what one really would do unless they are faced with the situation. I, fortunately, have not had to make either decision.

My argument against abortion has to do with God forming us while we are still in the womb.
The commandment actually is against murder.
And there are some crimes for which the ONLY adequate punishment is execution.

No-The Bible says an eye for an eye-the baby never hurt anyone. It also says in the bible to respect those given the rule over you. (judges, etc)If you kill someone and you are given the death penalty that is fair justice according to the Bible.
