I think your bird is just not happy with being caged without being able to come and go as he pleases. I have had ONLY ONE bird that displays this type of behavior in nearly 25 years of keeping pet birds; and that is my Maximillian Pionus. He/she (sex unknkown) just wants to get out of that cage in the morning and I sort of need to slyly walk past the cage and unexcitedly open it because I so much as speak to the bird in the morning (or even when it has been caged all day and I come home from work) before opening its cage, it will hop onto the front bars, spread its tail and dilate its eyes (serious attack mode)!

I have never had a bird with such an attitude and don't quite understand its behavior but I have just learned to deal with it as best I can and it sounds as though you have found a way to deal with yours as well. So keep up the good work!

He didn't have his coffee yet!
Seriously, some humans are not morning people, Birds need a little time for morning routine too!
If there is no drafts keep him by a window and allow him to get a nice view. If you leave him in the cage all day he probablt awakes to the "same ole'" each day.
have fun with him after your breakfast.

You are going to get some very helpful and expert answers but mine is probably very simple.
I would ignore it for the time being if he is perfectly fine later in the day. I believe he is not fully awake when he is aggressive. My cockatiel did that in the mornings when she was still half asleep.
