I'm from Trinidad and Tobago. Last Saturday one of my freinds from the Kingdom Hall and I went shopping. We went into a jewelry store and I saw some of the most beautiful Anklets I have ever seen.
My freind told me that it's not Christian-like to wear an anklet because that's how they identified Prostitutes in Biblical times. Is this true? I've never read it anywhere in the Scriptures.
As a matter of fact I'm freinds with a sister from Italy and she wears an anklet to meetings.

My question is, is wearing an anklet against bible teachings because that's how they identified prostitutes in Biblical times or is it a matter of culter and how some people think in other contries.

Numbers 31:50 mentions ankle bracelets as being an item among God's people. In fact, they are referred to as 'an offering'.
"Present each one what he has found as Jehovah’s offering, articles of gold, ankle chainlets, and bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and female ornaments."
So it would seem to be a matter of conscience.
If, because they were worn by some prostitutes, a woman would prefer to refrain ...fine.
If someone reasoned that since prostitutes also wore skirts, they best not wear skirts ......it seems a bit like pharisees.
On this one, YOU are the decision maker.

The decision whether or not to wear an anklet is generally decided by each individual and family head among Jehovah's Witnesses. Of course, in cultures and communities which view anklets as typical of prostitutes, a Christian would reject such trappings.

The publications of Jehovah's Witnesses have only occasionally mentioned anklets, and almost always in their historical context (such as Insight-1, page 112). Some translations of the bible mention anklets at Isaiah 3:18 (in a footnote to the word "bangles").

It depends on the local customs. If wearing certain jewelry identifies a person with an unsavory practice, it is best to avoid that jewelry. Where I live, many JW's have anklets.

In Japan, some local customs include having wind chimes to chase away the evil spirits. For that reason, JW's there don't own wind chimes, even if they want them for a different reason.

Nea above is wrong about wedding rings and about JW's "bending the rules." “The wedding ring is supposed to be of Roman origin, and to have sprung from the ancient custom of using rings in making agreements.” (American Cyclopædia) “Various explanations have been given of the connection of the ring with marriage. It would appear that wedding-rings were worn by the Jews prior to Christian times.” The International Cyclopaedia.

It is thus seen that the precise origin of the wedding ring is uncertain. Even if it were a fact that pagans first used wedding rings, would that rule such out for Christians? Not necessarily. Many of today’s articles of clothing and aspects of life originated in pagan lands. The present time divisions of hours, minutes and seconds are based on an early Babylonian system. Yet, there is no objection to a Christian’s using these time divisions, for one’s doing so does not involve carrying on false religious practices.

Of course, our concern is greater as regards the use of wedding rings, since this relates, not to minor secular matters, but to the marriage relationship, which the Christian rightly views as sacred before God. Really, the question is not so much whether wedding rings were first used by pagans but whether they were originally used as part of false religious practices and still retain such religious significance.

Your friend maybe a bit over-zealous about her view of the wearing of ankle bracelets. Check with the elders in the local congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Honestly I never heard that before. (or at least don't remember hearing it) But consider that it could be an issue in that area if people still associate anklets with hooking. You should probably ask her to show you her research. Hope this helps.

According to the bible a woman's hair is her glory, but, wearing anklets in Kingdom Halls here in the states will draw no attention. Many young ladies do. BUT!
This may Not be acceptable where>>> you live<<<. I suggest you ask the local elders............

Perhaps in Biblical Times they identified prostitutes in this way but there is no scriptural evidence to support that.

The use of wedding rings also has pagan origins, but the jw's still say that's ok. So, I don't see any reason why you couldn't wear an anklet. They bend the rules to suit themselves all the time.
