Me and my wife are in New York for New Years Eve. We have never been before and would love to experience the atmosphere in Times Square. I am a little worried about standing for hours in the cold and i am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how best to experience it. i am not bothered about being in the center we just want to be part of the experience.

We are quite happy to pay out for a bar or restuarant that would have a view.

We are open to other suggestions to so any advise is appreciated.

We are staying at a hotel in NYC but it dosen't overlook the square.

I would go to a bar or restuarant. It will be expensive but I would much rather be in a nice atmosphere.

It's so crowded and crazy and you are standing there for hrs and hrs just waiting.....I don't really think it lives up to all the hype....but some people love it.

Almost anywhere that has a view, with the exception of office buildings and hotels, are under tight security leading up to the ball drop. The only way you're really going to get any sort of view is to stand in Time Square... and wait.

Around 10am (yes, 10am not pm) people start lining up to "get inside." Around 4pm, the cops begin to barricade off the area. They search all bags and jackets before letting you into the fenced off area.Once you're inside you cannot leave the fenced off area. No exceptions. Even if you have to go to the bathroom, hold it for the next 8 hours, you're not going.

New Years in NYC can be incredibly cold, so make sure to bring warm blankets and dress in layers.

I went to Times Square last year for New Years. It was a great once in a lifetime thing, but it was incredibly overrated. I wouldn't stand in line for 12 hours again and be fenced in for 8 hours with no food or bathroom again just to watch a ball drop.

There is a olive garden at times square that would be perfect but you have to call and made reservations way in advance....
It would be the perfect place to go.. also know that the streets are almost c lose because of the people so you need to be wayyyyyy before.....

I went to Times Sq. on NYE once and it was worth it. To stay warm, do what most people do, which is get drunk. Or you could drink the hot beverage of your choice.
