Is it a deliberate and conscious distortion or are they not aware that most of those scientists themselves had christian beliefs?

Why can't atheists ever read questions before answering them? Could you please answer the actual question rather than talking about crap that has nothing to do with what I said?

If you can't read properly, then don't answer it. Go and find simple "yes" or "no" questions to answer.

Andymcj67(atheist), there is nothing "ambiguous" about it. And using the word "perused" doesn't make someone intelligent at all.

Btw, of all the people who really read the question, you are the only one who didn't understand it. Everyone else understood it.

Excellent question, Dan! Wish I knew the answer! I think maybe it is wishful thinking on their part. They're carrying around all kinds of negative feelings toward believers and God, and they HOPE they're right.

God bless!

You are absolutely right in saying that in the Middle Ages there was a false theocracy (church wielded the arm of the state) instituted by the catholic church... For 1260 years, this false theocracy reigned supreme even over the kings of the earth. Throughout these centuries there was little progress in the sciences. In fact, as we know, science was seen as an enemy of the established religion. These centuries came to be known as The Dark Ages! This is how Christianity got a bad name! But we need to remember that this false theocracy did exactly what prophecy said it would do, persecute the true Christians and put them to death, all in the name of Christ! The masses of the people were kept in the dark and this is how the then-known world came to be under Satan's deceptions. The doctrine of the immortality of the soul which led to the monstrous dogma of "eternal torments" made many infidels and atheists.

But the Scriptures predict that before the return of our Lord Jesus Christ in the clouds of glory, this religious power will be exposed for what it is and many will see the light and join those who are following the word of God and not mere human traditions and superstitions. Before the end, men will be captivated by the glory of an abiding Christ. Christ's true followers will shine with the glory of God! Isaiah 60:1-3. The indwelling of the Spirit will be shown by the outflowing of heavenly love. The divine fullness will flow through the consecrated human agents, to be given forth to others! And in currents of praise and thanksgiving from the many souls (many atheists among them) thus won to God, glory will flow back to the great Giver! And then the end will come!

For me, it's because the Vatican that killed Copernicus and threatened to do the same to Galileo was not a theocratic government, it was the Vatican, the source of today's christian faith. I firmly agree that Galileo held some christian beliefs, but only because he actually did. Those beliefs did not stop him from searching for truth however, and the truth he found put him at odds with the christian faithful.

Now, please explain why so many christians don't acknowledge "The Big Bang Theory" even though it was proposed by a devout Catholic? Do they have more knowledge of how the universe was created than the scientists that spend their lives studying it, or is it their religious beliefs that keep them from believing it?

I live in Kansas, there is a recurring battle between science and religion that is waged in the public schools. The school board has been working diligently to allow the teaching of "intelligent design" in our public schools. This is the work of "Christians" who are trying to infiltrate our schools with their faith. In this part of the country the lines between church and state are becoming more and more blurred.

The people have to mount opposition because there are those who will usurp our rights right from under us if we don't guard them vigilantly.

You're right. Christianity was the dominant religion of Europe, and most of the scientific advances ocurred in Europe. Not in Africa, not in the Middle East, but the Christianized places.
Newton and many other scientists were Christian. They had no problem with science at all.

It's based upon the would-be theocrats in the US who still oppose science in the name of their Christian beliefs. No confusion or subterfuge: just the way it is n the States.

Almost half of the people in this country don't accept evolution. I would say that means there is a large population of religious nuts who oppose science. And a large majority are Christian.

I think it's a little of both. People, on the whole (Christian as well as non-) tend to take a text out of context quite often. Add to that the fact that it's quite easy to twist a statement, book, etc. to meet one's needs at will, and you get the current state of American Affairs.

To Tzofia: While I agree with your statement on the whole, LOTS of science was "borrowed" from the Muslims in northern Africa and the middle east. There for a while, they had a significant amount of discoveries and findings that the Europeans did not.

"are they not aware that most of those scientists themselves had christian beliefs?"
No we are very aware that they publicly kept those beliefs so religious nuts in charge of the theocratic government wouldn't try to kill them. It doesn't matter the religion, any government controlled by religious dogma is a threat to freedom.

there in,is the basis of your question. Although I'm sure there were atheists in the distant past, they didn't give a **** about your deity.
Secondly, we atheists are not confused.. Thirdly, in the past everyone lived under fear.

So, I see, your realy talking about todays Christianity. I think your question should realy ask about today.,,again.... Why beat around the bush?
