If you are looking for a low calorie substitute try "Stevia" powder, there is a brand called "Sweet Leaf" available at most grocery stores. The other subsitutes on the market are all chemically altered substances the body is not meant to consume. Stevia is a plant that is 1000 times sweeter than sugar so it needs no doctoring up to taste sweet.

If you are a person with diabetic tendencies or you just want to prevent it, then Stevia is good for you because it is made from a South American plant.
However, if you don't have any family history of Diabetes always go with organic unrefined Sugar, it tastes better.
Avoid at all cost artificial sweetners as Sweet & low or Splenda wich are chemically bombarded.

Real sugar is the best. Do not use chemicals in your body. If you want a no calorie sweetener, check out Stevia. It is actually natural and the best product I have seen that is not a chemical. It is so good infact, that the sugar industry will not allow it to call itself a sweetner or even have sweet in the label or anything. Try it.

Honey and dark, brown sugar are great substitutes for refined white sugar.

Specifically organic honey with no addatives is surprisingly versatile and can be used very effectively pretty much everywhere you WOULD use sugar.

I agree with Twippin, though I think splenda isn't too bad either.
