I think it depends on the airline, but with so many divorced kids, I know it is common. I have seen five or six year olds traveling alone. The stewardesses take care of them and they walk to to connecting flights. May cost more, but I have seen it done! You are supposed to be 18 to buy a ticket, though.

It varies by airlines. The youngest my kids ever traveled alone was my daughter who went to Puerto Rico via plane to visit her aunt when she was 10 years old.

When a child flies alone, they must be a certain age to be able to handle a change of planes, and they must be a certain age to fly alone. For most airlines flying alone can start as young as 5, and with a connection as young as 8. The parent must provide support - taking the child to the gate, and arranging someone to meet them on the other side (you have to specify who this is and they have to show ID) as well as paying an extra fee for airline personnel to help the child.

(Note that parents are allowed through security when escorting minors flying alone, as are the pickup folks, but the arrangements need to be made in advance. )

I hope this helps

OK....here is the deal......If you are under 12 you need to be an unaccompanied minor...this means that someone will assist you from gate to gate, it is a requirement and will cost roughly 150 dollars US.

You have the option to be an unaccompanied minor between the ages of 13-18. This means that you can pay for the escort service but it is not required.

Basically, you can travel alone at almost any age, however, depending on your age you may or may not be required to have an escort.

Take it from me, I work for United Airlines!
Good Luck, and Happy travels!

There is no age limit! I've been flying on my own since I was about 8 (between Scotland and England to visit my parents). The airline gave me a little VIP tag to wear and let me get on the plane first and leave first and let the air hostesses know I was travelling alone.

However if you are under 16 and your flying without your parents permission I'm not sure! x

You have to be 18 to purchase a ticket, and it used to be that the kids had to be age 12 or above to fly alone, but I think that certain air lines have lowered this age. Each air line has different guidelines, so check with the air lines what age the child needs to be then look for the best price on the air lines that admit a child in the age range you need. Good luck.
