This is strictly my opinion. Paul was writing concerning the customs of that time. In that culture, at that time, "good" women kept their hair covered. "Bad" women let their hair show to let men know they were available. Covering the hair was a sign of respect, of submission, and humility.

On the other hand, men were supposed to pray with their heads uncovered. For a man to remove his head covering was (and still is) a sign of respect and honor.

Although it is not a requirement for women today in American culture to cover their hair, except in certain denominations, in many countries it is. If you want to cover your head, you may and it would be a beautiful act of submission to God. Most women use a veil or a scarf.

I know in the past women would cover their heads but most Christian women do not. At least not in N. America. Perhaps some fundamentalist Christians still adhere to that but that is the minority.

The head covering is only for if you have short hair. In the bible it is a shame for a women to have short hair because her hair is her covering. If you have long hair you don't have to worry about it. If you have short hair you should wear a covering (you can use bobby pins to hold a nice 'cloth' to your hair, or wear a hat) as to be the covering that your hair would have been. I see some people wear the covering all the time. I think it is mainly in respect to God.

I think that Jewish llaw stated that a Womans hair was her crowning glory and should be covered,it used to be practiced in the Catholic church pre-Vatican II and if I remember the covering was usually a black lace affair called a `Montilla`
