I received a letter from the IRS asking for proof of my 2004 charity deductions. I did not save any of my receipts from that year. What is my best course of action?

Contact the charities.....under the new rules they should have sent you a statement .....otherwise you will have to call or write them and ask for one...if it's a donation of non cash...such as goodwill it may be difficult to get one since they don't keep records of non cash donations...The IRS under the new rules will not accept copies of checks.

Depending on the charity you donated to, they might have records of your donation and be able to provide you with another receipt. If not, the deductions will probably be disallowed. Your deduction must have been pretty substantial for the IRS to send you the letter on it, so maybe the charity will remember it or have records.
