I guess you have to let people have their beliefs, but since you're asking, I think that's just dumb.

Generations of kids grew up watching Samantha Stevens wiggle her nose and do witchcraft. Most of them today are law-abiding, church-going (if not Church-going), non-satanic individuals.

Fundamentalists tend to make up rules as they go, regardless of how based they are in reality.

I think most Christians do not think this way -- it's only the more fundamentalist ones who do.

As suggested, most professed Christians are not the same way. If they were, I assure you, HP would be practically unknown. Who do you think is buying all of those books?

The bible *allows* for what you brother believes. In other words, though the bible definitely *does not* proclaim that sorcery fiction is evil, it does speak against sorcery (or witchcraft). Your brother is merely a member of a sect that believes that *all* forms of "witchcraft" - fictional and non-fictional - should be avoided.

The bible makes it clear that some people's beliefs are more restrictive than others - and that is OK. The bible gives the an example: it is OK for a Christian to be a vegetarian and refuse to eat meat on Christian grounds. It is also OK for a Christian to believe that it is OK to eat meat! This is a matter of personal religious belief, and should not be an issue *dividing* Christians.

Thus, Christianity accepts those who believe that HP is evil and those who do not. There is no specific (scriptural) rule against it, and none specifically permissive of it.

I am Christian and I say it is just a book plain and simple. People that cannot tell reality from fiction should probably leave it alone, but the same could be said for many literary works not just Harry Potter. It is unfortunate that some people fall for that kind of control.

That's just ridiculous! Harry Potter is like Superman, Spider Man and so on... just a fictional character for entertainment, why do people have to be so extremist?

No most Christians do not feel this way. There are some that do but the vast majority, like myself, recognize that it is simply a story about the battle between good and evil.

I agree with Brian.

Don't put your brother down for making this choice. Every parent has to set the standard for their family, according to their faith, or lack of faith in God.

I don't particularly want my children reading the Harry Potter books, but I have some Christian friends who are ok with it.

The point is, do you want your children to uphold as heros and role models kids who practice witchcraft?

For me and my family the answer is no. There are plenty of other books and series out there where the characters in the stories model behavior that is more in line with my faith.

Your brothers church and him get this from the Bible where it says that Witchcraft and soothsaying(fortune telling) is not of God those doing or taking part in any way of witchcraft or sorcery shall not inherits the kingdom of God. So they go literally by what the word says. Your brother is doing his best in God to bring up his children in the ways of the Lord.

almost all of the references from the books are from actual witchcraft rituals. The Bible warns against having ANYTHING to do with that stuff, even remotely.

If you want to mess with that stuff, or even have your kids mess with that stuff you are taking a huge gamble. God would not say to avoid it if it was just fun and games.

Most people do not listen to God anymore. It is never to late to turn around and accept Jesus as your saviour. You must be born again, time is also coming to an end now.
