Dr. Phil once said that when a person is habitually late it is because they are self absorbed and egotistical...that you think your time is more valuable than everyone else's. Now you may not actually feel that way, but it IS the message you are sending. Keep that in mind and use it to discipline yourself more. Be realistic about what you have to do in the morning. How long does it take you to get ready, REALLY? Set a time table for these tasks and force yourself to do them. Give yourself extra time if you need it to wake up, instead of stealing the boss's time. Organize your house better so you aren't scrambling to find things in the morning...put your keys and wallet in a basket on the dresser, set out your clothes the night before, and have muffins or yogurt available for ready to go breakfast.

Set your alarm clock up so that you get an earlier start, and take the bus or subway to work. That way, you will HAVE to be on time. Some experts say that tardiness is a sign of animosity toward your employer. If you are still consistently late, you may want to consider whether or not you really want to work where you are, or if there is an underlying reason that you simply cannot make to work on time.

it doesn't matter what anyone on this site tells you nothing is going to change. I get to work 5-10 minutes later nearly every single day. If I get up an hour earlier it doesn't make any difference something will happen or I will have the worst traffic you ever saw. Some of us are just programed to be late. Hopefully your boss is as understanding as mine, he could not care less as long as when I am at work I get my job done!

I know what you mean! It gets even harder when you have a kid that you need to take to the babysitters (like me)! I always leave a little early in the warm months because of unexpected delays (road construction mostly). When it starts to snow, I also leave early because I have to drive slower. I call the babysitter the day before to be sure she will be there and remind her of the time (I work at different times). I set out my daughters clothes and everything she will need the night before so I can get her ready quickly. I make coffee in the morning and get ready while its cooling (multitasking haha).. And I make something quick for breakfast (my daughter wont eat anything but toast for breakfast anyway so thats easy). I also pack her diaper bag the night before.
You just have to manage your time and adjust plans accordingly. For example, if you usually leave at say, 10 am, leave at 9:30 if its snowing or if you have to stop at the bank. Plan the night before what you have to do before you leave for work. Ie: if you have to get gas before work, set your alarm 10 minutes early. Make the snooze button your enemy and resist the urge to climb back into bed. Hard to do but its possible.
Good luck!

I can totally relate, but lately I've been car pooling and that has helped because it's not just my time anymore,... I'm on someone else's time and don't want to be the cause of them being late too. Perhaps you can see if you could do something similar, would that help?
And of course some of the other answers have some very good points too!

If you have to go by bus or train, try and work out what time the buses and trains run - if you have to start at nine and the 8:30 train/bus gets you there late, get the 8:00 - you might get there for 8:45, but better than finally arriving at quarter past ten 'cos of the traffic lights and things!
Also, don't waste time doing housework before you go out - as I had to do with my family. I was often late for work, even though the journey took about twenty minutes -not because of bad time management on my part, but because my family insisted I had to do things like housework THEIR way before I went to work. "No" only existed in their vocabulary when the answer should have been "Yes", and vice versa. Of course, I lost pay, because, thanks to them, I was late and therefore unable to put in my full hours - I was still expected to pay full board and lodging, though - even if my wages were below the minimum amount I had to pay them, which was nearly all my pay packet anyway - they just said I had to take less for myself - as I was lucky to end up with a fiver or less, I could hardly cut back any further.
My brother, though - who had been working, but quit his job as the wage was too low, had his dole suspended - but he had more money than I did, as on Fridays, he and I would go out drinking and playing pool or snooker for money with friends of his - and he was able to bet on the gee-gees and the greyhounds!

Try and go to sleep earlier so you can wake up earlier and that way you can probably beat the traffic you might have to think about taking an alternate route. Some days I have to take up to 3 diffrent ways to get to the office.

You're quite obviously not trying too hard, or else you WOULD be getting to work on time. I think you know the answer to this one: go to bed earlier, wake up earlier. When your alarm clock goes off, get up. It's just that simple.

You say you 'always get through that door LATE'. you've answered your own question. Leave your home earlier and then you'll be on time. Stop blaming something you have complete control over...get out of bed earlier and leave for work earlier. then you won't be as late you silly billy!!

I had this problem and I ended up changing my working hours! It sounds drastic but it wasn't really. I was always in a rush due to my bus timetable, and it either got me in work VERY early,,just on time (not very often) or about 10 minutes late...I spoke to my boss and explained the situation and she agreed for me to start abit later and finish abit later. Maybe u could do the same?
