I know someone who gets really angry and sometimes violent when he drinks too much alcohol. I am wondering if this is indicative of some mental problems he has, or if it is possible that he is perfectly healthy mentally if he stays off the alcohol. Does he need to see a doctor or is stopping drinking all that he needs to do?

Mean drunk... some people cannot handle their alcohol. I have flown off the handle for no real reason when too drunk... Limit or stop the intake and you're fine.

Alcohol is a depressant. Meaning that it brings your mood levels way down after drinking too much. So, the fact that your friend is violent and mean, is not out of the ordinary. In fact, that is a normal side effect of drinking too much alcohol. Now there could also be the issue of why your friend is drinking as much as he is? Sometimes depression can lead someone to this type of behavior. So, in other words, it could be that he has a mental health condition in addition to his excessive use of alcohol. Your best bet...take your friend to a doctor and get some professional help. It's always best to be safe than sorry. Good luck!

alcohol is a drug. And like other drugs it can bring out behaviors in people. For some it can make them really happy others can become violent. Some can get sleepy and some can get really goofy or sexual. It affects peoples moods. Does this mean they have mental issues no. but they do have a drinking problem if they drink too much and it alters their mood.

This happens to many people, and they should learn from it and realize when they've reached their limit.
Too much booze can change the most innocent quiet person into the most violent and obnoxious person on the planet, but it does depend on the person and also on what they are drinking. Some people may react badly to whisky for example, while others can't handle gin.

My wife reacts badly (aggressive towards me, and obnoxious) to too much alcohol, so she's careful nowadays.
Me, I tend to believe that i'm the World's greatest singer when i've had a few whisky sours.....and while that may not be violent it probaby does piss those around me off.

Hi....

alcohol is a depressant, and does not bring out the best in many people. some people are "allergic" to it as well, and it can have an adverse effect upon them in general.

i think that most people who overindulge in alcohol, have some underlying mental illness, such as post traumatic stress, depression, etc., and us alcohol to self-medicate; however it doesn't make things better, only worse.

if a person has these issues with alcohol, they need to avoid drinking all together... yes.

you can have fun without it.

There are many different kinds of drunks. There are happy drunks, sad drunks, mean drunks, and then those that have their pre-drunk mood amplified. Luckily, I am a happy drunk. My brother on the other hand is a mean drunk. He could be flying on cloud nine, happy as can be until he has a few. Then he turns into a mean and nasty S.O.B. The funny thing is, he doesn't know that he's being mean at the time. It took us video taping him for him to realize it.

The easiest solution is to not let them drink. But since that is not always possible, just stay away after he has had a few.

In my experience, it has to do with a persons tolerance. I have met people who can drink one type of alcohol and be "fun" while a certain kind turns them mean. Most of the times the ones who lash out (or are mean) have underlying issues that they keep hidden.

I don't know any person who behaves normally when drink a lot of alcohol.
Behave of your friend might mean that he is sustaining some anger inside of him and should not be allowed to drink, because he might put both him and all around him in a big trouble.

Usually that means you have an alcohol problem. If you can't control your anger or your alcohol limits that is usually not a good sign. I would definately say they need to stop drinking.

Some get violent- some get sad- some get happy.
Anyone that drinks to much will get one of this 3.
Take care.
