They don't. People used to crop pit bull's ears so that when the dogs fought, or hunted hogs, their ears wouldn't be torn off. Thus the cropping. It's still done today because of a certain "look" it gives the dog.
I've owned pits for the last 16 years. My last one died a year ago at the ripe old age of 14. Never cropped any of their ears. Never felt the need, cause I never fought my dogs or hunted with them. They are loyal pets and watchdogs.

They don't.
Cutting a dog's tail or ears has and always be 100% for cosmetic purposes. People get it done so that their dog looks more vicious or threatening (ie: a doberman in a junkyard).
Sometimes the process of cutting tails/ears is harmful to the puppies. I've heard people killing their pups because they couldn't do it correctly. Also, if the process is planned to be done, it HAS to be done while they are pups.
I think it's a rather cruel thing to do. How would a person like it if someone came along and cut off half their ears? :p Something that's potentially harmful that has no real purpose just isn't a very intelligent decision.

A Pit Bull's ears do not have to be cropped, it is a personal choice by each individual owner. I own 6 American Pit Bull Terriers & only 1 of my dogs has her ears cropped, The rst all have the floppy ears.
Cropping is very unnecessary and it is a serious surgery.

there is no reason to do this to your dog! Besides vets wont dock tails once the puppy is over 9 days old. They usually crop puppies ears at 3 monthes of age. But this is stupid and cruel, why would you want your dog to look mean? Pits already have a bad reputation.

The tails and ears of pit bulls do NOT have to be cut. In fact a show quality dog can be either way, unlike , say, the docked tail of a Boxer which is required. People do this to make the dog look more fierce, I think. My pit bull has her ears and they are one of her more charming physical traits.

i have a pitbull and have owned others... we have had some done and some not.. the ones that were done was cause they hunted wild hogs and a hog will rip the ears off.... the pit we have doesnt have her ears done but we did remove the tail and only cause when she walked by wagging it , she would leave welps on our legs... i think its just a choice people make to make the dog look better in their eyes...

They don't have to be cut. People usually cut the ears so they don't get ripped off when in fights I guess that fashion has kinda stuck. Personnally I prefer all dogs to be as they were born, with ears and tails.

They don't have to be. This is done for cosmetic purposes. I personally am against ear cropping and for that matter tail docking as well. Many people will disagree but i personally like dogs the way they are meant to look naturally and would prefer to spare them the pain of having these things done.
