The male dog is able to mate at any time. The female is the one who must be receptive, and in the right cycle of her estrus (heat), or she will not allow the male to penetrate her. Are you sure she's ready? Is she standing still for him? If she moves away at all or tries to nip and bite at him, she's not ready. If she's in her prime estrus, your male dog shouldn't be having any trouble getting it in.

how long has the female been in season? Just because she is in season does not necessarily mean she is receptive to male attention...there is a small window of approx 3 days during the season where the female will WANT to mate and then there should be no problem at all, its all trial and error.. you do not mention the ages of these dogs...are they old enough to be mating? Before you do decide on embarking upon breeding, please look at your reasons...also make sure you have a whelping box ready, a quiet room for the mom to be with her pups in private etc, its not as easy as you may think!!

You.don't do anything....they will do it when she's ready......not much different to us human ladies lol. There could be a problem with the male's dangly bits but a trip to the vets should answer that. Don't try "helping" because either one of them or both could end up biting you, as happened to a friend of ours a few years ago when he tried "helping" his doberman. Just leave them in a safe area and leave them alone but from a position where you can watch them(!!) if necessary.

If you don't know how to mate your dogs should you even be trying to breed from them?
I'm a breeder and it's not as straight forward as you think.
Are your dogs of chmpion blood lines? are they pedigree? are they of breed standard? Have they had DNA tests, hip and ear scores?
Have you done your reaserch on caring for a pregnant b itch, are you ready for a messy smelly home while she is whelping and nursing? Are you preapred to rush your dog to the vet at 4am if she gets into difficalty and end up with her giving birth mid journey getting afterbirth and all sorts of yucky stuff all over your car seat? Are you prepared to bottle feed 8 puppys every 2 hours (10 times a day) should your b itch reject them? Are you going to be around for the whelping? You may need to get the whelps out of their bags and cut the cord? Are you squeemish? If so i'd advise against breeding it's really not that easy.
If you want to breed for money then good luck to you because any reputable breeder does not make allot if any money!
I am only saying this because it's nieve people who breed bad dogs that just end up clogging up the RSPCA. If you want to do it properly go onto the Kennel Club web site and look under breeding there is alllot to consider before you even breed your dogs.

Please do your homework if your not going to do it properly for the benefit of the breed then please get your dogs spayed and neuterd.

If the female's not standing still for him then she's not as ready as you thought, give them a few more days and let them try again.

You don't have a clue about breeding! Why are you breeding your dogs? For money? Trying to be a backyard breeder?

There are millions of adoptable dogs in the world being put down in shelters because there are to many dogs and not enough homes. Mostly because of backyard breeders like yourself.

GET YOUR DOGS NEUTERED AND SPAYED for crying out loud.

Since you obviously don't have a clue what you are doing, quit trying to breed your dogs and do some research FIRST.

Take the male to the vet and have him checked out. Could be he's just bent and with no hand available for aiming, he'll never succeed.
