i think any true new yorker's relationship with the city is a love/hate one. it's always been that way, judging by the stories of the previous generations of my family who have lived here, and my own experiences.

new york has been through good times and bad. in pre-rent-control new york, people used to move so often than landlords would keep painting apartments to try to get people to stay longer. depression-era new york was awful, and post-war new york was great. there was the 1960's modernism and optimism that found the bronx abandoned and burning by the 1970's.

like any place, new york could or should do better in many areas, but never will. like the subways and busses. they should be more efficient, but they simply are not, and will never be. their extensive coverage makes up for a lot of inefficiency.

and there are other changes as time passes, and one may remember the past more fondly than deserved. as much as i like the current ethnic diversity of our taxi drivers, when i was growing up, a hack was most likely to be an Old Jewish Guy.

and the Old Italian Barbers of my childhood? they were the best!

NYC is a very expensive city to live in. If I HATED it here, I'd move. Prices go up, but salaries remain the same. Housing costs are astronomical. It's overcrowded. Traffic is horrible. These are some things I wouldn't miss. Living here is a choice. It's a lot easier to live and work elsewhere. But there is so much going on here, unlike any other place I've ever been to. There are endless opportunities.

Now, I love nature. I wish I could live in Portland, OR, minutes away from greak hiking trails, some of the best nature I've ever seen in this country. But I'd have to give up my job, which for there is no substitute in a smaller city. I'd have to say goodbye to my friends and family. I'd have to turn away from all the opportunities that this city has to offer. I'd miss the diversity, and yes, even the attitude.

Living in NYC can really get you down, but there's a trade-off. There are very few who hate it here that don't have the opportunity or the freedom to leave. NYC is a town that you have to love to live here, or else life can really suck.

Although there are many positives I don't enjoy living in the city. This is a city where people on 96st living in luxury condos while people on 116st are on welfare. The subway system is mediocre at best and the two football teams play in Jersey. Some New Yorkers can be rude. However, there are many good things about the city (museums, restaurants, etc).

I live here, I don't hate it, but I also don't think it's the best city in the world. It has it's pros and cons, just like any other city. The obvious con is that rent prices are absolutely ridiculous. I'd like to own a studio for less than 500k one day--that's the one thing that will eventually drive me away from living here.

In the meantime, I'm enjoying my time living here--knowing that I won't be here forever is what pushes me to explore it as much as I can while I'm here.

I do not live in NYC anymore becuase of a job transfer, but when I did live in NYC, I absolutely loved it. There is not a better city in the world to live. You can get anything you want. If you get an urge for a certain type of food at 4 am, you can find a place, usually within walking distance of where you live. So much going on in NYC, I miss living there.

I am a native NYer and wouldn't trade it for the world. I love this city and like the previous dude said, if you don't like the city then move. noone is holding a gun to your head for you to stay.

NY is a great city, with different cultures and great sights, and great arts.

You all be bitching and moaning about how expensive it is if you were living in Miami, LA, DC, London, Moscow, etc.... So if you prefer living anywhere else, usa, have a great time and fyi when you do open that door to leave nyc, don't let the doorknob get wedged in the crack of your a.s.s.

I remember New York to be a place where people actually talk to each other and there is electricity in the air.

London, on the other hand is full of self-absorbed people who only connect with each other when they get drunk. If something funny happens on the train or tube, your typical Londoner will look away and not share a laugh with you. A New Yorker would laugh and maybe even carry on the humour thus creating a connection between people travelling together.

Both cities have their pros and cons and if I actually hate where I live, I would move.

There's no point in staying somewhere when you hate it.
Life is too short for that.

I've lived in NYC all my life and sometimes, I really hate it. It's not the city's fault..it's just most of the people that makes it worst.

To all those who respond to this question and agree with you, nothing is stopping you from leaving NYC and making it better for the rest of us. This town is already overcrowded and the last thing we need is more haters here, most of whom arent even natives to begin with.

Go to bumblefcuk arkansas where the most exciting thing you will see is grass growing and your choice of mates consists of cousins and step-siblings
