an tattooist does not get an regular hourly rate. They get paid on how many tattoos that they do a day. At my shop we have a starting fee of $50 per tattoo. meaning that that is what you will pay for the smallest tattoos they fit in a one inch circle. Than the price goes up from there. The larger or more detailed the tattoo the more you pay, the more I make. Now some days I might only make $50. other days I might make $900. It all depends on if some one wants a tattoo or a body piercing and what they want done.

it really varies, most artists don't just get paid by the shop to be at work from x time to x time. many are paid either by the number of tattoos they do or they charge the customer for the tattoos and then they pay the shop a percentage. also more talented artists make more money. sometimes there are busy days and sometimes there are dead days. my artist charges customers $100 an hour for tattoos and he has to pay a percentage to the shop he works at, i think about 30% or so. so if he has 6 hours of tattoo work that day he'll pocket $420 BUT he also has to purchase ink and other supplies, the shop does provide some things like paper towels but not everything. tattoo artists have the potential to make a lot of money, some make upwards of $300 an hour, it all depends on talent and demand for that artists work.

My best freind owns a tattoo shop. He is open 4 days a week, and makes about $150,000.00 per year. He is very good though. It takes 2-3 months to get an appointment. Quality makes a huge difference.

Does it not depend how many tattoos they do in a day? I would have thought most tattooists are self employed and so the more work they do they more money they make.

I think it all depends on talent and how well your name is known. I mean Ami James pbviously would make more than some guy in a small town and with minimal talent.

Depends on the location of the shop, the rates they charge, whether or not they're the owner or commissioned, whether or not it's a busy day... it all depends.
