It's my birthday today and my wife has organised a 'surprise' party for when I get home from work.

As our boys are quite young (3yrs & 15mths) we'll be having Daddy's favourite trifle, then playing some games and having stories before their bedtime. After that, once all is quiet, I'll be having lamb in a rosemary & redcurrent sauce.

Do you think that having dessert followed by my main course will work? Also, red or white wine with the trifle?

Thanks for the good wishes. The evening has been great fun.

For those who couldn't read between the lines - it was the boys who thought it was a surprise. That was all part of the fun!

i always eat desert first... just in case you run out of room while your eating your main meal... :)) red wine is good...
i am happy to see such devoted parents as you two including your children in on your surprise party... that is so sweet... keep up the good work raising your children to be so sweet as well.
children learn what they live and live what they learn...
god bless you all and have a happy happy birthday...
cheers

Sure! It's your day! Why not? That way the kids can have dessert with daddy, and you can have a relaxing meal later. I'd say champagne or some port with the trifle. Red wine with the lamb. Perhaps a medoc?

Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear birthday boy, happy birthday to you.

Have a lovely day and an even lovelier birthday party with your young family. I think this is a fantastic idea, have all the goodies with the kids and let them join in the fun. You sound like a nice caring family.

How can it be a surprise party when you know about it?!

Mmm, eating pud before dinner, not ideal just have a small portion and have mint sauce instead with the lamb.
