There seems to be many different types of cancers. Are we looking at just one thing?

yes there is but what is sad is that the government won't let go of the cure because they are making to much money on cancer treatments off of people and it's sad. There are cures for many diseases but governments are so greedy that they will let someone die or stay sick just to make a few bucks.

Very good Question. I have asked this same question to various oncologists, researchers and many others but I have got only evasive replies but not a positive reply from them.

Scientist still do not know exactly how a CANCER starts, and the cure for it. But they do know that a Cancer can occur if some thing goes wrong with the cycle of growth, division and death that occurs in most cells.

There are over 200 types of Cancer at different parts of our body. There are various types of treatments available for different cancers. Day by day new medicines are being invented. Of late scientist have invented some vaccines too.

There are many treatment options available now. The treatment plan for cancer mainly depends on the type of cancer and the stage of the disease. People get Cancer and suffer due to very many reasons.

Doctors also consider the patient's age and general health. Often, the goal of treatment is to cure the cancer. The world wide research also aims this goal of cure. They are to some extent successful to control the disease or to reduce symptoms as for as possible.

And my ultimate conclusion in this regard is that if the disease is detected in the early stages it can be treated and the life of the patient may get extended only. Though the treatments destroy the cancerous cells, it comes back again in most of the cases with out any cure. Even then we can not keep quite and we have to fight it as STILL IT IS AN ENIGMA-

Panda is right on the money. No cure for cancer in general, but treatments that can cure or cause remission in certain cancers if caught early enough.
As far as a the government covering up a "cure" based on monetary gain, how much money would someone stand to gain from finding a cure? Way more than the treatment provides. Besides, the government doesn't make money on cancer treatment. Only the doctors and hospitals.

There is no all purpose 'cure' for cancer, but there is treatment that can lead to individuals being 'cured' or going into long term remissions (absense of disease). There are over 200 different types of cancer and four different stages of each of those types. When a cancer is stage 1 it is small and localized and can often be completely removed which leads some to say they have been 'cured'. A stage 4 cancer is more difficult to treat because it has metastasized (seeded millions of malignant cells into the blood stream or lymph nodes) but it is possible to treat a stage 4 and to have long term remissions considered 'cures'. But it is all very individual and depends on the patients age, overall health, tumor location, and response to treatment. Cancer is complicated too by whether a tumor is low or high grade . .meaning how quickly it grows.

The answer to your question is that . . no we are not just looking at one thing with cancer. Cancer defies neat little descriptions . . as it is possible for some tumors in the body to have different kinds of make up or be a souped up mixture of different cells . . this is one reason cancer is treated with different modalities and different chemo combinations. Cancer is further complicated by the fact that it is not foreign to the body . .the body treats a tumor in the same way it treats organs, arms, eyes, and other vital structures . . it nourishes it. Tumors often have their own blood supply.

Novelos' pipeline of drugs is based on oxidized glutathione, a natural metabolite that is part of the glutathione pathway. This pathway is the primary determinant of intracellular redox (oxidation/reduction) potential and, as such, plays a key role in cell protection (e.g. detoxification) and in regulation of cell signaling pathways (e.g. leading to cytokine production). Novelos’ lead products are believed to act, in part, via post-translational modification (glutathionylation) of critical regulatory proteins that mediate processes including immune function, cell proliferation and tumor progression (in combination with chemotherapy). They may also sensitize tumor cells to certain chemotherapeutic drugs by modifying drug detoxification processes.
