Why not use the blue masking tape made by 3M? It's designed specifcally for painters, and peels off very easiy...no residue either. It comes in a variety of widths and can be used to secure mewspaper to the carpet (in effect, widening your protection zone.) I use the blue 3M tape every time I paint and never have any problems with it not doing its job or with clean up and removal afterwards.

Check paint departments in your local stores. There should be a device similar to a mud spreader that is used when finishing sheet rock.
Try tucking the device between the carpet and skirting to pull carpet away from area you're painting.
Of course, this could be tedious because the device will have to stay in place until paint dries.
OR
You could use the device to press a drop cloth or something similar between the carpet and skirting to hold in place until your paint is dry.

a stable trick I discovered approximately utilising masking tape to make the lines strait, is to take a razor blade and decrease gently alongside the sting of the tape so as that it does not pull up paint with it. It feels like your tape is actual pulling up the winning paint, no longer the hot paint... that sucks. i'm going to wager the previous human beings used low priced paint.

Don't use newspaper it will stick to the paint. Try to get/find a strip of hard plastic material. This can be slid along the skirting board. I have used a cut-down piece of margarine box lid. Don't use the paint too thickly, you can always apply a second coat if ness.

i still think 2 inch masking tape works the best. pull the capet nap away from the wood as much as you can, and try to get the lip of the tape under the board. let the paint dry completely before pulling up the tape. you may want to score the tape with a utility knife before pulling it off to prevent tape sticking or pulling paint off.

You mean base molding around the floor? Try a piece of cardboard or a yardstick that you can wipe off each time you move it along.
