China has always had the goal of being a major world power. This probably results from a long history of being overrun from the north. They have, however, never had (to date) a history of expanding their frontiers overseas. I think they worry about Russia and the Asian Tigers more than they do the US.

9 out of 11 answers are flat out wrong.
First, China does not have a history of imperialism. They have no desire whatsoever to occupy other countries for their own self interests. They learned the lesson of trying to do that long ago and it is expensive and wars rarely has the outcome as intended. If you wonder how that can be, just look at our two wars. Have they turned out as intended? Were they short and easy as that was sold to the American public? China listens to its past, we keep repeating it.
Second, China can now afford to upgrade their military. If they were going to invade other countries, then why did they reduce their military force by 1 million a year ago? Why is it that we are so concerned with their modernization, but other countries that modernize barely gets a whisper in our press and halls of government? Based on China's past, there is no reason to believe China will invade another country. In the past two centuries they have been invaded by Japan, Britain, and 7 other countries in the west. Yet they have not gone outside their own boarders during that whole time and the only countries that could be considered an invasion is Tibet and that was because China has claimed it for centuries as it was part of China in the past. Every leader in China wanted it, including before the last Emperor.
Third, the Taiwan question has been a question for close to 60 years. Taiwan and China have normal trade, tourism and diplomatic missions. The only flair ups are probably based more on appeasing the haters on both sides and the USA for continual funding of Taiwan. Plus the UN took a lot of steam out of Taiwan's continual claim to be sovereign when it told them they would not recognize it as a country because it had no legal right. I believe Taiwan and China will be reunited when China becomes more powerful economically and as they change their government to a democratic republic which is happening now, and as they stated, "one country, two governments" exactly what is happening in Hong Kong.
Fourth, China has stated to the world and its people that it will not invade a sovereign country, that they believe in a countries right to self determination, and they also believe in diplomatic solutions rather then angry words and confrontation.
Doesn't sound at all that China is a threat militarily. The only threat that they could be is economically. The reason is, they plan for their future, while the USA just muddles along thinking that the old way will work just fine, with no planning and globalization leaving them in the dust.
I live in China as an ex pat from the USA

This is what my girlfried wrote in regards to Taiwan and is universally accepted in China as their right. I concur based on history.

No. of course the Chinese would not ever think about invading foriegn countries....They are building up thier military to ensure that the freedom loving peoples of China are defended from teh imperialsitic Western powers....
and if some units get lost by accident moving across borders you wouldnt want them to be alone and open to attacks from those local militaries would you. Plus Taiwan really is part of mainland China....just temporarily confused by the West into thinking it might be a seperate country and the Chinese military might have to help the locals see the error of thier ways....

They are not doing it for self defense,Remember China as a 10Th rate military power fought the US and UN to a standstill in the Korean War. America's "Shock and Awe" tactics depended on US military satellites to guide all their smart bombs. China has the proven Military capacity to shoot down these satellites and short circuit the "Shock and Awe" tactics.
When is the last time America scored a clear cut victory in a war. not in Korea. Vietnam, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan etc.
I can only think of Granada and Panama, little flash wars. American youth are not enlisting in the countries Armed Services, Paints a bad picture for America.

China plans to invade Taiwan at anytime and will use nuclear weapons as the first assault wave. They have also threatened to launch nukes at U.S. forces if we step into assist our allies in the ROC. Their nukes aren't as good as ours, but they have quite a few of them. Most of their military's crap anyways. Their ground units use Russian-designed stuff that doesn't last long. Their planes crash frequently. Their navy doesn't even have many blue-water ships. They can defend their coastline, but would lose in a head-to-head clash with the U.S. 7th Fleet. The Chinese don't have many troops similar to our Marines and lack the amphibious assault ships to conduct a major invasion. They do have an airborne corps without all the transports they need.
I'm a military fiction author and one of the opponents in my books is China so I know a lot about it. I think it's only a matter of time before the Chinese attack Taiwan and we'll be drawn right into it. Thank God for bases in South Korea and Japan to use as staging areas for massive bombing raids or a big Marine beach assault.

They are building up to either invade Taiwan or force them to rejoin with the main land. They have been watching the US war with Iraq and are waiting. The public is getting sick of war and are going to elect a president who promises to get us out of Iraq. In 2011 when the US forces are winding down they will make there move on Taiwan. The hope is that the then president then will not want to get into a war that will be bloodier in one week that Iraq was in four years.

China is updating their military. They are still only spending 10% that the U.S. spends. A simple pay raise would increase the cost of their military. A couple of things they are doing is getting warships to have "blue water" capability and they are modernizing their airforce from biplanes to third generation aiurcraft to fourth generation aircraft.

China's military budget is 66 billion USD and the United State's military budget is 630 billion USD (2006 figures). Take note of the disparity between the US and Chinese military spendings. In fact, the US military budget is still higher than the budgets of all major countries combined (Britain, China, Russia, France, N. Korea, Iran, etc).
The reason why China spends more on their military buildup nowadays is that they can afford it now. In a true sense, it is not even a military buildup, but a major upgrading of their existing military equipments to the new technology. Most of China's military hardware are still of the old Cold-War era technology.

YYess,,
The US must attack China, with the full weight of it's atomic
arsenal, before they grow too strong.
There's still time to do this, and re-schedule the Olympics, and hold them at the superdome, in Minnisota.
;oO
On the heels of the stunning victorories over Afganistan, and Iraq, it makes perfect sense.
The USA must crush it's enemies.
Just as we did against first rate opponents in Granada, and Panama. It was close for a while, but the US prevailed with the advantages of our matchless firepower & ultra high tech.
The USAF with new systems like the F-22 coming online
will ensure our total victory over any and all, who dare oppose
us.
A couple of nukes on Japan in the past has been shown to work too, maybe we can help out GM, Ford and Chrysler by putting Honda and Toyota out of business for a few years.
The USA could also cleanup, with re-buliding contracts
like we have in I-rack !
You see, when we help others, we help ourselves,
it's a perfect win-win scenario, and only a sniveling
Libtard could argue with all that.
"they hate us for our freedom" *
*President George W. Bush.
