When we are based in a personality that is self-degrading, we limit our forward movement for we are steeped in shame and have serious issues relating to deservability. Unless we clear our shame and recognize our inner beauty, even if on the surface we appear whole and complete, our truth will win out, and our self-contempt will make itself known.

By finding the causes to this inner demon and clearing its energy, then and only then can the change we put on our surface find root within.

Hello Kallan
I can not say that I agree with the quote, especially as it includes the word "never". What I do think is that self contempt is rarely a strong enough motivation for effective change.
On closer examination though I really think the most effective inspiration for lasting change is HOPE, which sometimes is only a faint ray of light in the dark tunnel of self-contempt.

I of course, have my hope in Jesus.

EDIT: I know we do not agree on a few things, nonetheless I do appreciate your gallant effort to bring thought provoking ideas to the table.

I probably misunderstand it..I do that frequently. It was not so much the actual self-contempt as my method of dealing with the self-contempt that caused the lasting change in my life. I learned that the events in my life that caused those feelings of worthlessness were not MY choice. I really hated myself, sister, no joke. When I dealt with those particular demons, and with lots of help from a friend, I have made a remarkable difference in my attitude and I can honestly say that I don 't think I will ever look back.

I do agree, I believe that the only thing that inspires lasting change is the feeling that something different is possible. Self contempt could take one to a place of total exhaustion, where they are ready to say - "Somethings got to change". The distinction is that 'that moment' of inspiration, and cracking the soul open to possibility, is different than the monotonous grind of self contempt. There are many paths to the moment of possibility, self contemt is one of them, but it is definately what you might call a 'long cut'.

If there are things about yourself that you change because you find them contemptible, then I would say the change would stick. There have been things about myself that I hated and changed. Then again, if you allow yourself to become defeated by these feelings of loathing, then the chances of change are greatly lessened.

I agree with a modified version of that quote:

"Self-contempt never inspires positive lasting change".

Self-contempt, you see, can have permanent negative effects.

Hello Beautiful Soul!
No I don't agree with this...you see once i was an angry hateful horrible person. I hated myself and i made an effort to change. I believe that i have succeeded and that it has been lasting( 10 yrs now!)

But you could also look at it as love for myself~ i wanted to be nicer.....but i really do believe it was because i hated the old me so much that it has stuck!
I intend to be the nicest person i can be for the rest of my life~ no i hope thats lasting!

I agree. When I made changes because I didn't like myself, it always seemed to not do any good, so I reverted.

When I make changes and tell myself, "I'm better than this." It turns out that I am and the changes last.
