Think of things that are easy for a 4 year old to eat e.g chopped veges in different containers, fruit chopped up and a little lemon juice to stop some things from going brown. Someone suggested soup which I wouldn't do as I have seen many little kids try to eat it at school and it always ends in a big mess. Bite sized biscuits and muffins are good because they are really easy to eat. Mini yogurt pots because they will eat it all so no waste.

What about dips and raw veg in strips? Proper cheese in cubes and cold meats chopped slices, and crackers? Grated carrot with some poppy seeds and raisins/sultanas, spritz with some lemon juice. Try oatcakes and ricecakes.

As a dinnerlady I recommend you leave out crisps and chocolate in any shape as much as possible. I can definitely tell you that there's a correlation on the amount of it in lucnch boxes. The fatter the kid, the higher proportion of it in their lunch box, also the healthier the kid, the less of that stuff in their lunch box.

PS also keep an eye of "fat free" food, usually laden with extra sugar to keep the taste right.

Maybe a fave sandwich, a drink of juice, a piece of fruit and a biscuit. What about a small tuna pasta or a cheese pasta.

Chicken wraps.

A lovely box of freshly chopped salad with cling filmed crusty bread and butter pieces.

Chopped chunks of good cheese celery and halved cherry tomatoes.

It's always nice for them to have tiny tubs of fresh chopped fruit.

four year olds like finger foods...some good ideas might be left over pizza or little smokies (like little hot dogs)
you can also cut sandwiches with a cookie cutter to make different shapes.
Roll ups made with flour tortillas with stuffing of chicken salad or tuna salad and cut up into small pin wheels
you can also get uncut hot dog buns and stuff them with different kinds of meats and or salad mixtures and then cut then small for little hands
as far as dessert...homemade choc chip cookies...homemade anything keeps sugar and preservatives in check

Just so you will know, kids usually like having the same thing that they REALLY like. When I was a kid, all I wanted for lunch was a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I looked forward to it everyday. Ask her what she really-really likes. :o)
