I have just bought a new sports bottle and I find that, like every one that I have had before, the water tastes horrible when you drink out of them. Is there any way that they can be treated to prevent this happening?

Yes. Try soaking it in distilled vinegar. Vinegar will sterilize it and can eliminate odors. Another solution requires a little elbow grease and a large bottle brush and soap and water. Also, another way is to put coffee in it. It absorbs any unpleasant odors and tastes.

Hi

YUK!!!

I know exactly what you mean, its awful isn't it.

Keeping it simple and non-scientific, plastic sports bottles are made of soft plastics so they contain lots of 'plastisizers' to make them squidgy and flexible. Sometimes, especially if the bottle gets warm, your drink can get tainted by some of these leached plastisizers or monomers.

Also, these soft plastics can 'hold' strong food flavours and odours which will taint other products you put in the bottle.

The solution - firstly, give the bottle and cap a really got scrub with very hot water and fairy liquid, rince several times with hot water and allow to drain - if the odour is still there, fill it with bleach and let it stand overnight, then rince it out with at least 10 lots of hot, even boiling water (be careful)

If that does not do the trick - cut your losses and dump the bottle.

Let it soak in water for a couple of days. That should get rid of it.

Also, clean it with dishwashing soap at least once or twice a day so that the soap smell counters the plastic.

You can buy Bicarbonate of Soda from the cookery section in your local supermarket.
Use 1 teaspoon of bicarb dissolved in warm water (not hot) & pour into the container. Leave for half an hour & pour away. the container should smell better & the water shouldn't be tainted.

1.don't use those kind of bottles.
2.just wash it reallly well and regularly.
3.if you put in tap or filtered water, it stinks really bad!
but just try to get used to it and the smell or taste will eventually go away.

or just use bottled water!!!

I use a proper metal sports one with a coating inside, no taste other than what I put in it.

You could try sterlising it with milton, or just letting it soak in washing up liquid.
