Some good answers and some seriously dumb ones. Elizabeth W, such a sophisticated answer for someone who doesn't eve have an avatar, no offense. I do not like to be catorgorized as having a certain religion. Doctors have only been able to determine that the heart pumps blood through the body and the brain thinks, but they cannot tell us what makes it all work and gives us the will to live. Some say evolution, the wanting to understand where and who we are. Without disbelief, there will be nothing to believe in. Without evil, there would be no good. So, I can say this as you continue disbelieving in something you cant see, feel, or understand. The believers will keep to trying to convince you that it is easier not to believe than to try to understand. I challenge you to find someone that you love, and ask yourself why you love them and that is every reason that GOD loves you, that is why GOD blessed you with them. So you may look at him every time your heart is filled with LOVE!

Nonbelievers will try to convince you that it is easier to not believe than to try to understand. How can you love your mom, sister, brother, and child and not Love GOD. Your explanation for loving your family, should be the reason for loving GOD.

Others have already given you very good reasons (lack of evidence for example) let me give you a philosophical one based on the science's discoveries: evolution theory and the big bang's theory show that our universe and life evolve from the simple to the complex. There are lots of evidence in favour of this fact. Why then think that the origin was something as complex as a almighty god?

Usually if there is no evidence for something existing you don't believe. So for me that is the reason I don't, I simply have seen no evidence that to me is in anyway substantial. Sunsets, puppies, and love are not proofs of God for me. In order to have any meaningful discussion about the existence of God though you have to define what God is. Are you referring to the Abrahamic monotheistic God. A pagan God? A deistic notion, Spinoza's concept or modern pantheistic idea? There are many concepts of God, some more amenable to falsification than others. All religions though tend to put God beyond the reach of objective study and evidentiary proofs.

Read your response. I do have an avatar but I am told by Yahoo that they are having some trouble with getting avatars to post and are working on it. That is why you probably see so many "gray heads". I appreciate that what you wrote in your response makes sense to you, fine have your beliefs. I am happy, well adjusted, find lots of reasons to live and enjoy life without sharing them. They don't make sense to me, they do to you. Love is an emotion that has evolved. Animals love their young and thus the young have an increased survival rate and the species survives. As social animals love helps us bond with one another and form societies and families to the mutual benefit of all. This may sound cold to you but it doesn't make love any less meaningful for me. I believe in many things like social justice, human rights, the support of my family and friends, myself... I just don't believe in supernatural deities or that they are necessary to life or morality. A moral code can be arrived at through common sense and reason. Peace.

Today's religion is tomorrow's mythology.

If any "god" were real we'd still be worshiping the "gods" of hundreds of cultures and societies from throughout human history. How is the johnny-come-lately "god" of any religion different then any of the others who preceded it, or will follow it?

When I see any evidence of the existence of "god," or any mythological creature, I'll believe in it.

The Earth is billions of years old and in all that time not one single tiny shred of evidence has come to light to show the existence of a god.
Is that a good enough reason for you?

Can't give you a reason not to believe in GOD. Can give you a very good reason not to believe that the god of the o.t. is GOD. GOD is not a murderer. Here is a bonus reason, GOD does not contradict Himself.

humans made the religions that gave us the illusion of god...

further more even the bible condemns religions.... as in do not pray in the open as the hypocrites do but do so in private.. it has several more indications of what a hypocrite does and in EVERY instance a christians does it daily.

The bible further goes on to saying that Satan shall call itself god of the earth... the fact is Satan is the ONLY one calling itself god... so there you go...

But I can give you a good reason to believe in
Thor. If you tick him off he will zap you with a lightning bolt and if you think it does not happen just read in the news about how many people he zaps every year.

Because what if you have a wife and she dies....and goes to heaven. Then you get remarried and fall in love... You die and your new wife dies and you both go to heaven. Then your first wife is so glad to reunite with you in heaven until she finds out you remarried.

Well if you say that we will not be like that in heaven or be married anymore... then who in the hell will we be??? Do we lose our families in heaven? Are we not men and women anymore? If that is the case, then screw going to heaven! I don't want a god that can't create a better system than that.

I think most of these answers miss the point.

To believe is not the same as proven. believe means "to hold as true". It is an act of the will. It is reasonable and rational to hold something as true as long as it is not proven to be false.

We have to have a motive to hold something as true. Columbus had to believe the world was round in order to get to India.

Christians have hope to be united with their Creator. That hope is the motive.

It's pointless, there is more than likely nothing I can say that will just up and make you an atheist... Just like there is nothing you can say that will make me become religious again.
