Darkness is just absence of light; not its opposite. It has no substance nor essence... It is no more a "thing" than "Atheism" is a religion (which, for those who cannot read a whole sentence, it isn't).
As such assigning importance to it is secondary to assigning importance to where light need not be.
Furthermore.... consider the vastness of the Universe for a moment. Remember that light needs a source, but darkness is simply what is left over everywhere else. Consider that over 99.9% of the Universe is just empty space....
.... And then consider how much "darkness" there is compared to light out there.
Comparing the two is a joke.... basically.
As far as the Universe is concerned... Light is like that last bit of dust that you sweep under the rug to make the room look clean.

No, darkness is the absence of light, without darkness there would always be light. You don't need to see bad things for you to be happy. When I'm doing something I enjoy, I'm happy. Its not because of the alternative, I'm oblivious to that. Its simply because of what is there. The same with light. It isn't dependent on darkness, it stands alone as good. Blind men always would rather see, if darkness was equally good, why would they wish for the light.

That is a big concept in Taoism, things are defined by their opposites, hot/cold, rich/poor, dark/light, male/female, yin/yang.

God created light when He saw there was darkness, and gave us both to see, so both are equally important. you need darkness to appreciate light

Balance is the key to a tranquil life...even though it will never be perfectly 50/50.

It is as essential. There's got to be balance in nature and in everything that exists. That's the wonder of existence and we have to appreciate it.
