I think life simply begins sometime close after 'birth' and ends at 'death' which I'm OK with being defined as at the point in which the brain ceases to function. When life becomes self-aware is the point at which I think the 'real' life begins and when this self awareness disappears, we can be safely considered dead. Theists often believe that the start point is at conception. This, they attribute to an irrational belief in the sanctity of human life. I don't think it 'starts' until sometime after birth. Believing this leads me to conclude that abortion is OK and even euthanasia of a severely compromised new life that stands little or no chance of leading an independent and fulfilling life. There is already a big problem of over-crowding on this planet to be indulging the moronic concept of sanctity of life. Our goal should be quality of life for those who have already become self-aware.

Though I have no specific religious preference and tend to lean more towards being Agnostic (because I am ambivalent when it comes to whether or not God is there), I can't help but to think there are elements of the essence of life that cannot be explained or identified. It is perplexing really, when you look at a sonogram and see movement and hear a heart beat...you know that's life in it's simplest form. Could that life have previously been a essence, spirit or soul waiting to come into the world? Possibly. It very difficult to wrap my mind around. I guess my final decree on the subject is yes...there is life before birth...maybe.

We all would like to believe that we lived in the past and will live again in the future, but it doesn't seem plausible.
We try to be brave in contemplating our own mortality, but we still have great difficulty in believing that our beautiful life will really end some day, maybe even tomorrow.
There seems to be an endless supply of spirits or souls, so there doesn't seem to be any need to recycle.

There are lots of documented cases of reincarnation and of persons who recall previous lifetimes.
Check out any books by Dr. Brian Weiss or "The Search for Omm Sety" or the story of "Bridey Murphy".

The Universe doesn't deal in beginnings nor ends... but nor does it deal in "eternity" persay.
We fade in.... and we fade out.
No specific points of start nor finish... but from nothingness comes this temporary form we grant name and personality.... and to nothingness again it eventually fades.
