With all of the cars on the road today, it is wise when choosing a car to take the car's safety rating into account. While most of us do not plan to be in an accident, it is nice to know that if that time comes you will be surrounded by a quality built car.

Hondas and Toyotas will be your best bet, Nissans can be alirght if in good condition, but not as good on average as the other two you listed.
Another suggestion is Subaru, it is reliable, high quality, great resale value, and has AWD. You could probably get a 98-03 Impreza with decent mileage in your pricerange.
Good Luck!

Hi Marisol,
Personally, I like Hondas. They seem to be engineered well and have thoughtul refinements that Toyotas lack. Hondas' vtec engine is powerful and economical. Nissan adds personal touches but for reliability, comfort, and better resale value, I'd choose Honda. But take your time, doll. Research, don't rush, be patient, prudent. When you find the right car for you, you'll know it. Trust your instincts. Buenos Suerte Nena...= } btw: loved ur pole question!

You are right to be looking at Japanese brands. On average, they will be more reliable than other brands, and a safer buy. With only $5000, your choices will be limited and it will be very important to have any car inspected BEFORE you buy. Also run a Carfax history report. Used cars are sold "as-is" and you can't return them if you find problems later.

You're going to have a difficult time finding a new Xterra for less than $25K. The Kia Sorrento is the only small SUV available for anything close to $20K.
