Well, it's not "abandoned", but one of our most *haunted* and spooky locations worth visiting is the ship/hotel the RMS Queen Mary, located in Long Beach, CA. It's just a little south of Los Angeles. I've been more times that I can count-- to stay in the hotel, tour the ship *AND* to ghost-hunt with friends.
During the latter part of October, the ship hosts a HUGE nightly "haunted" event called "SHIPWRECK". Haunted mazes, live bands, dancing... It's worth the price of $35.
Okay... enough kid stuff... lol.. on to the truly spooky; Here's a website that details literally hundreds of supposedly-haunted, and little-known locations in Southern California (some of which, I've explored myself!):

Enjoy!

The WWII armory and bunkers up on the hill at Palos Verdes.
They are hard to find, unlisted and totally interesting. I can get you as far as the lighthouse. Take Hawthorne Ave south from Del Amo Mall in Torrance all the way up and over the top of 'the Hill' to the bottom, I think it's Palos Verdes Dr. North, left at the stoplight, right turn into Pt. Vincente Interpretive Center (they might have changed the name - it's the site for the whale-watching center) and park there.
That old lighthouse there is supposedly haunted, but turn around and look up that bare hill behind you. Somewhere in there, and somewhere on the hill on the San Pedro side are the WWII air-raid bunkers and armory for watching for the arrival of Japanese ships, submarines, and planes during WWII. They are there, you just have to find them. Ask the local skater dudes or surfer dudes on the Strand at Hermosa for more info.
#2 is the Civil War Drum Barracks in Wilmington at the bottom of the Hill at Palos Verdes. It was featured on "Unsolved Mysteries" for being haunted by Civil War soldiers stationed there. I don't know if they have a Halloween day thing, and you need to call ahead for an appointment.

Those are cool.
Griffith Park Observatory, Griffith Park is supposed to be haunted. Also try the Museum of Western Heritage - fun place to visit, some of the old Hollywood movie western displays give me the heebie-jeebies.
Just a plain interesting place is the Mt. Wilson Observatory up on Mt. Wilson. Take Hwy 2 out of Glendale and climb the hill to the top. Take a right turn at the Split, turn right on to Mt. Wilson Road. At the end of it is the observatory (not open to the public but it has some vistor info there) but the cool thing is seeing all of the radio and tv broadcasting towers there. And the funny thing is, radio reception sucks right under the towers. But the view on a clear day is fantastic.
They say The Queen Mary is haunted but I never saw anything. But across from the Queen Mary is the route used for the Long Beach Grand Prix next to the Long Beach Convention Center. They fixed up the old 'Coney Island' style amusement park there, but those old buildings along Pacific Ave are all haunted.
That's just to get you started...
P.S. DrDee ---- GREAT LINK! THANKS!!!

There is a popular one at the top of the hills west of whittier. The Sheriff is up there often though. Anyone from Whittier or La Mirada has been up there. Residents are friendly if they are out. Address to follow.
