It has to be a lot of FEAR!
For the Bible says T"he Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom......" Prov 9v10a
Fear in this context equates to Respect, Reverence and/or Submission. Just as you would to our parents or goverment/ law, but it is more higher.
To Fear the Lord is to Love the Lord. You fear your parents not because you are scared of them but because you love them, that you are willing to submit.

"Religion is a byproduct of fear. For much of human history, it may have been a necessary evil, but why was it more evil than necessary? Isn't killing people in the name of God a pretty good definition of insanity?" Arthur C. Clark
to my own words fear is a necessity of life if you want to cross the street in one piece but when is goes to paranoid schyzoid proportions it's called religion.
peace through sanity.

As a Christian there is no stranglehold of fear in my life.
The Bible says that God did not give us a spirit of fear or timidity, but a spirit of power, love and a sound mind.

Scripture tells us that fear of God is the beginning of wisdom, but, to be saved a person must love the Lord thy God with all their heart.
There is no requirement of fear to be a Christian so there is no stranglehold of fear.

When you love someone you shouldn't FEAR **them** but rather, you fear upsetting them. Not because you are afraid of anything they'll do to you but because upsetting them should upset you.
Unfortunately, many in Christianity are professed Christians (in name only, not in practice or beliefs) only because they fear hell-fire. It shouldn't be that way.
People should not have a morbid fear of God. He wants only the best for his Creation.

Wow, what a hard question.
Let me think.
Religions of all kinds say "Believe this or do thus, or you will be punished".
Hmmmm, sounds a LOT like an appeal to fear to me!
Cheers :-)

Perfect Love Casts out Fear... God does not want us to fear but trust... If you are a follower of God and have accepted Christ's sacrifice and also have given our lives to God..We should not fear anything, yet most of us do...The reason is we fall short, we sin....and this further attests to the fact that we need a savior.. One day we will not fear... for some this day will come while on earth, for others in heaven.

I can't speak for all Christians, because I don't know them all, but I am a Christian because of Gods love, not fear.

Fear is the basis of most religions. And that fear is not for the sake of any god, but for the benefit of the powerful elites/priesthoods etc in those religions. Law, democracy, human rights and a civilised society now offer people freedom of thought and action wthout any "spiritual" interest groups to control them.
