I gave a relative $10 for her birthday because that is all I could afford. Should I just have not given her anything because $10 might be insulting?

Does not matter the price of the gift.....the importance is that you remember the person's birthday.

It is what you give that is given from the heart. I think $10 and the fact that you cared enough to remember her birthday is not cheap nor insulting. If she is petty enough to think it is, then that is her problem. Small gifts that gather dust when gas for your car is so expensive would be acceptable by me. Give a card. The dollar store has some really nice ones. Money is always the right color and size. lol

This may sound trite, but the best gifts come from the heart. The fact that you thought to give the relative anything when you really can't afford it is very nice. While a gift card is nice, receiving anything from someone you didn't expect to get something from is a pleasant surprise and should be graciously accepted.

No one has the right to be insulted by a gift. A gift is given freely from the heart without expectations from the reciever. I hope your relative recieved it graciously and gratefully! Personally, I like money because I can choose how to spend it, and not worry about recieving something I can't use or don't like. But its the thought that counts. And like a gentelman ahead of me said, we would all be lucky to have you as a relative!

um, i would say next time make a card yourself, like on the computer and actually buy her something instead of giving her that money. Maybe a pair of slippers, or a scarf with matching gloves, there are many things you can find for under $10. Like TJ MAXX or ROSS or MARSHALLS are all discound dept stores, im sure you could have found a really decent gift for $10 and under. Its not being cheap, if thats all you can afford then thats all you can afford, but find a better thing to get with that money in my opinion

Some people just give a greeting card, some people give balloons, some just a phone call. If you can't afford more then you shouldn't feel bad. I don't even think you should of given the $10.00. You should of just given a card, with a nice birthday wish.

Of course it is not insulting. My goodness, you should only give what you can afford. I think $10 is a perfectly fine birthday gift.

$10 and a nicely written card or letter saying happy birthday, and maybe a bunch of flowers picked from your own garden or a cake baked by you is a GREAT gift!

Just $10 on its own is a bit bare (not the amount, that's fine, but just giving money alone seems kind of impersonal to me).

Cheers :-)

No way! I say, good for you! I think that our society is too materialistic, and that the relationship is important... not how much money or material wealth you put behind the relationship. They (or she, in this case) should be happy just to have you in their life, and know that you'll be there when she really needs you, and not just there when she wants some extra candy or something... Nothing to be ashamed of at all, really!
Cheers!
