I live in Lake county. I'm shocked and unprepared to pay over $11,000. Last year I only paid $7,500 for 2005.

This is happening all over the state because the tax cap has expired.
Compare your property tax bill to your neighbors, and if it is relatively high, you can complain.
Lake County does have high property tax.

That is a huge increase. It may be an error on the governments part. I would immediately, if not sooner, contest the property assessment. Most counties will provide a guide on how to contest your assessment.
Check with your neighbors and see if their assessment went through the roof too. You can also organize your community to contest the assessments as well. There is power in numbers.
Get your elected officials involved. Remember that all elected officials want to be re-elected and if the constituents believe that they aren't doing the job then they will be thrown out office.

You do have the right to contest the increase. I would check into why your property increased in value enough to cause a $4,000 increase in taxes. You can also fight this with an updated appraisal of your property.

If it went up because your appraisal changed, you might be able to appeal it. If they raised the appraisal, you should have gotten a notice when it happened.

If they raised the millage (tax rate) that much then there's not much you can do.

Contact them - they might be getting a lot of calls these days. Pay what you can, and they'll probably be willing to take payments on the rest.
