I was a contractor for 4 months last year, and I was self employed for that period of time. I frequently worked from home (33%). My employer also provided a place for me to work in their office. .... Question: Can I still claim home office deduction? Can I claim for vehicle expenses that I incurred towards commuting to work, going to user groups, trade shows? I have a sizable income from my contractor work. If I can not take home office or vehicle deduction, I do not have any other expenses. I used my personal home computer to connect to the work to do work. and I have bought couple of books towards my business. Please help.

It doesn't sound from your description like you used a part of your home regularly and exclusively as your principal place of business - you say you worked at home around 33% of the time, which would not qualify as your main place of business even if you had a room set aside that was only used for your work and never for anything else.

The mileage to commute to his office, which WAS apparently your main place of work, would not be deductible either. Mileage going to user groups and to trade shows would be deductible, also the books you bought for your business. I assume that you already had the personal computer, didn't buy it exclusively for the business, just used it for business - you can't deduct that either. You could take a portion of your Internet fees for the four months, prorated for personal use.

Judy is close: If your employer provided you a place to work from, then that is your main place of biz and it does not matter how much you worked from home, since you fail the "main place of biz" test for office in home.

Her answer is 100% correct as far as car use.

abode workplace deduction may well be apportioned between the corporation ventures based upon the quantity of time spent on each and each. vehicle fees are literally attributed to precisely the appropriate corporation so are apportioned that way. word, all condo activities are pronounced on ONE time table E so which you will combine all the charges there.
