The red dots are flea poop that have fallen off of your cat. Fleas survive on biting the animal and gorging on the animals blood. The flea poop looks like small flakes of pepper until it hits water then you will see a red or rust color. Your cat is lethargic more than likely due to being infested with fleas. Look through the fur on your cat until you see the skin...notice anything that looks like pepper? Take him to the vet and get him treated. Once treated he should perk right back up.

It probably is flea dirt - flea dirts turns red on contact with water, because it's blood.

You need to get a proper flea treatment for your cat from a vets - i.e Frontline, Advantage or Revolution. Unfortunately you won't be able to bath your cat within 48 hours before or after applying these treatments because it'll stop them working. Make sure you get the stuff on her skin, not her fur.

Stay well away from any treatments from stores, unless you can find one of the pet stores that does Frontline. Store-bought treatments do not work, any many have caused a lot of feline deaths. Don't bother with flea shampoos or collars, you'd be wasting your money.

If it's a dull sort of red then chances are it's "flea dirt" which is actually flea poop. It's actually the leftovers from the blood the fleas drink from your cat. Check her coat, deep down by the skin and see if there are small black particles that resemble dirt. If so, that's flea dirt also. When she gets in the sink, she sheds flea dirt in the sink, it gets wet and turns red.

It's from fleas. Get some Advantage ASAP and follow the directions. It's the best.

Is it dark red or merely amber-colored? Cats' tears are amber-colored so if the dots are bigger, that's probably what it is. Check her fur in front of her tail and on her neck for little black spots. This is flea dirt and your cat needs to be treated. In any case, a trip to the vet is warranted without delay.
