if out on bail, then sentanced, the judge could give you 30 days or so to get your affairs in order, before starting your time..........

No. Bail is set before your trial, allowing you some measure of freedom. If you meet the conditions of your bail, it is returned to you when you appear for your trial.
If you had to pay money after being sentenced, you were "fined". Fines can be imposed even if you are physically jailed. You do not get fine money back.
