A buddy and mine are moving into a townhome in January and we were thinking of making it into a bachelor's pad. We're college students and single so we wanted to have a place that attracts people to come over so I was wondering if any of you could give us some ideas on how to make it look like a good, true bachelor pad.

It's about 1000 sq ft. 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom; fireplace, "cathedral ceilings", nice kitchen, etc.

any ideas would be appreciated and some links to tips and stores would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

The cliche is black and chrome furniture, a black or glass wine rack (full), chrome bar chairs, prominent stereo system, glass and chrome coffee table, and a tame girlie magazine on top of a New Yorker and Esquire on the coffee table. I suppose a large-screen TV would be required now.

There are different ways to play with that. If you're poor and unashamed, you could do it obviously on the cheap. Empty wine bottles, non-functional electronics, ratty old magazines, and dorm-room cinderblock bookshelf painted black and silver.

I think an interesting approach would be to have several nude images that are sanctioned as serious art (think Boticelli's Venus). That plays with the sexual connotations of bachelor pad without being smutty, and makes an ironic comment on standards of decency.

The mention of cathedral ceilings made me think of a church motif. This might be an offensive suggestion, but stained glass and banks of candles are definitely romantic.

Leather! It's manly, holds up well to getting spilled on, etc, and it's very "nice" if you happen to have a hot chick or the p's over. You can make it look like a bachelor pad without it looking like a frat house. I would suggest a black leather sofa and musical accents.. Like Framed rock album covers.. an electric guitar mounted to the wall.. that kind of thing. Fun but not tacky. Good Luck.
