should i
1.) try to sheepishly release it without much commotion
2.) excuse myself to the loo, at the expense of losing out on this interview (cos they might think i'm disinterested)
3.) try to create an adequately loud diversion like coughing out loud, or dragging the chair across the floor or pretending i choked...

what should i do?

If you have to pass gas in the middle of a big interview, or a big date.. or any big event.. let me tell you..

If you try to create a diversion (as you descibed in #3).. that never works, and you end up looking like an immature person.

If you do #1.. you may or may not get away with it.. it's hard to tell if it's silent and deadly.. silently and not smelly.. or loud.. and some potentially silent ones, start off that way and end with a pop.. so point is.. your taking a heavy risk with #1.

Option 2.. is the proper one.. however, it's all in how you excuse yourself to the bathroom.

If you just say.. "Hey, can I use your bathroom." Then yes, they may think your disinterested.. however, if you say something like..

"I'm sorry, but can you excuse me to the bathroom/loo for a moment.. my stomach is upset over something I had for lunch."

Then your not admitting to gas.. and an upset stomach, most people will identify with .. and even sympathize with.

Once you return (as quickly as possible).. then make sure that when you come back you say something with an apology and thanks in it.. like..

" Thank you for giving me that moment, I'm sorry that we had to be interrupted. Where were we?"

And boom your back on track, and because it's YOU putting the interview back on track, with Where were we.. then that shows that you are professional at handling a not so good situation and then getting back at the task at hand.. with out going into your personal issue.. of why your stomach hurt..

For example.. if you came back and said something like..

Yeah, my stomach was really not good.. I had this sushi stuff... for lunch .. etc etc etc..

The point is.. too much information ,and the information is taking away from the whole point of the interview.

So if you can just make an quick excuse, and then a thank you and a brief apology and a statement to get back on task.. then you should be okay with out ruining your interview.

Good Luck..

P.S. Next time you have a big event like this..

They have Gas x and Bean-o that can help..
or you can just watch what you eat before hand..

Finally if for some reason you couldn't hold your gas in.. and it let out and either was loud or stinky or both.. then be honest, and apologetic.. most humans understand..

Wow what a predicament, I would probably ask to use the bathroom, but then it might squeeze out while walking away. I would try a slow release and use a noise diversion. To see what you are dealing with. If its silent and not bad smelling just let it go. If it stinks...well i feel bad for you. This is really a lose lose situation man i feel for you.

Or just take beano prior to the interview next time also.

So 1 and 3

make a faint knocking sound and the person interviewing you might get up to answer the door, at which time you make the chair dragging sound and fart at precisely that moment. there will be too much going on for him to notice. if you think that there might be need for some extra distraction, knock something over too and make it seem like he did something to knock it over himself ; )

actually the sheepish release method might work, if you have a known history of silent farts, but silent/deadly, you better ust hold it in

4) Watch your diet before going to an interview so you do not have these gastrointestinal difficulties. If you are called for the interview at the last minute, take an over-the-counter aid such as Gas-X to help avoid these problems.

Crank it. Throw a leg up on his/her desk first, crank and light. They'd love that.
