A blood spot on an egg can be due to fertilization, but it rarely is for store bought eggs. Roosters are not allowed anywhere near laying hens in modern egg farms. They occur from a rupture of a blood vessel on the surface of the yolk follicle, before the shell is formed. A blood spot does not make the egg inedible!, regardless of its cause. However, eggs with blood spots are not Kosher.

No not safe every egg is held to a light and checked for blood, every now and then they get through, this is why most cooks break eggs one at a time in a separate bowl so if they get a bad one they will not waste a whole bunch.

Yes, it was safe to eat. It was a fertilized egg, but nothing about the spot of blood would have hurt you.
