Spanish, Hebrew, Arabic (or some Middle Eastern language) or a major Asian language (Japanese, Korean or Chinese, which happens to be two languages, Cantonese and mandarin with a various load of different dialects.) Or try Tagalog (the official language of the Philippines). Or perhaps Afrikaans, or Swahili. Ever thought of Hindi?
Learn these and you will be able to speak to some one any where you go or be able to use them in job that pays well and travels well just because you can understand one of these languages. Job opportunities are abound if you learn one these languages and in great variety too. I could come up with a longer list of what one can do for a living if they are bilingual or multilingual. Every where I go, there is a significant population, but small or may be large (at least in the states) that speaks one of these languages. It all depends on what you want to do with it and where you want to go.

Right now, here in America, Spanish is probably the most useful language to learn. It's also the easiest. But if you want a job, there are lots of job openings in the west cost for Chinese speakers, and Japanese speaking jobs pay very well. As far as hearing a language goes, German, Russian, and Japanese can be pretty rough. French, Chinese and Japanese can be smooth and flowing (partially due to soft consonants and words ending in vowels). Japanese can be both; I know from experience, as each word can be said several different ways, and some times you can choose to use a harsher or softer consonant, depending on your mood. Latin is a dead language, but if you're interested in science or just want to learn the root of European languages you could try that. Good luck on your language learning, and I hope you choose a language that you enjoy learning.

French is the best one to learn.
French is a primary language in most of Europe. If you are fluent in French, you will have an easier time trying to communicate in many places rather than trying to find someone who speaks English to help you!
Almost half of English words have French origins. With knowledge of French you will have additional information on word meanings and sentence structure.
Being French Fluent will make French-speaking cities seem all the more beautiful! When you are able to converse in the natural language, you appreciate the beauty of the country more than if you need a translator for everything.
Many international films are spoken in French. Knowledge of this beautiful language will help you appreciate the film without subtitles! Plus, if you ever get the opportunity to go to the Cannes Film Festival, you will enjoy it more!

Depends for what reason you want to learn a language. I'm learning Italian because it is the language of my ancestors. I could care less if it is popular or will give me some business advantage. In fact, sometimes speaking a language that is NOT popular will gain you more job opportunities because there are less people to hire to interact with that community.

Hi,
According to about.com, over one billion people speak Mandarin, making it the world's most popular language.
Learning it might not be a bad idea. However, if you live in the United States (particularly California and the southwest), Spanish may be the more practical option. It's the third most popular language among native speakers (Hindi is second).
Whatever language you choose, do your best to stick with it.
