He did promise to return within the lifetime of his listeners...

Shouldn't women, at least, know better than to believe men who say they'll be right back, just popping to the store to get a pack of smokes, if it's already been a few years?

I think he clearly promised to come back in the lifetimes of those who saw him then. Even Paul, who never actually met Jesus, says over and over that time is short. He even says young people shouldn't marry because there's no time to raise a family.

When Jesus didn't come back, Christianity had to change! Even so, though, nearly every Christian intellectual in history (and no, that is not an oxymoron) has believed he was living in the final days. Even today many Christians seem absolutely sure they will be spirited away in the rapture any day now (though they still contribute to their 401k!) And even those who aren't sure about it love reading Left Behind books and imagining their non-Christian friends in hell.

As for your question ('Broken promises?'), you would have a point for the people who were there, who heard Jesus say again and again that the end was coming soon. But people today, who were born nearly 2000 years later, should know by now that the promise of being the last generation wasn't made to -them-.

No one knows the day nor the hour that Jesus will return...we just have to be ready. There is no certain date or time. We cannot calculate His return. A thousand years is but one day to the Lord. Also, there are certain things that must take place before Jesus returns. Until those things happen, He will not come back. Broken promises? I doubt it seriously!!

Yeah, so? God is not slack concerning His promise. He is patient and not willing that anyone should perish. Once all who are going to be saved are saved then Jesus Christ will return to earth, and not before.
God always delays His wrath and judgement until sin reaches a certain point, such as in the days of Noah.
Since all the other prophecies/promises of God have been fulfilled we can know that the second coming of Christ will also take place.

God is not limited by time and space, time and space are irrelevant to Him. God can see, hear, knows all things, everywhere, and all the time simultaneously. This being the case, time would have no dominion over Him. His description of time and our description of time may well be two different things. The end could come at anytime. The main thing is to be a Christian and to be ready.

Broken promises?
"We have achieved peace for our time" Neville Chamberlain
Prime minister of England, (just before WW2,after offering up Poland on the altar of sacrifice).
"Weapons of mass destruction.." declared by George Bush, before he sent your children to die in an illegal overthrow of a foreign government,..

Broken Promises? Science, will pursue the altruistic assault, to eradicate the diseases that plague mankind....
Science instead, has pursued the course to 'treat' the diseases that harm mankind...more money in the treatment-than the cure.

If you can show me a timetable, then maybe the promise was broken. However, I have yet to see a posted timetable in the scriptures.
