To clarify: Does anyone else see a problem with describing themselves in relation to what they are not?

Quill clarification: Atheists don't have to "believe" there is no god. That throws the whole group right back in the fray and is the reason there needs to be a label that doesn't address "belief" in the first place... how about "rationalist?"

Sam Harris says that we shouldn't need a label for people who don't believe in the objective existence of gods, just as we don't need a label for "people who don't believe in the Easter Bunny" or "people who don't believe in astrology".

freethinker, humanist... but if you're an atheist, be proud of it!
The word theist means someone who believes in the existence of a god or gods, and in this context a- means "not" or "without". There is no ugly meaning attached to the definition "atheist", only to the connotations many have with the word.

There is! free thinkers is. as i always saying this, atheism is not the best alternative of theism. being a free thinker, like me, i dont necessarily believe in god,its just a cosmic force w/c surrounds us. and our ancestors perceives it as a god. we are creation that has a deep sense of worth but people is just too insecure that they created religion to make their selves secure. if im god i dont want my creation to be a stagnant as any religion do. our being, as human, have to grow up, explore with the things we never did, we must live fully. things dont just come and go. making our life worth it.

Not holding a belief in God makes you an AGNOSTIC.

To be an ATHEIST you must BELIEVE there IS no God.

ATHEISTS say things like: "God is a myth invented by man."

AGNOSTICS say things like: "I've never even been off this planet. How would I know if God exists?"

I think it's a perfect label. Are you afraid of being labeled as an atheist?
