It depends on which areas he specializes.
For example, a preacher can have a doctorates in theology and specialize in other areas such as public training and business, but fail to see the pain an abused woman goes through, or how drug addicts work, and be unaware of mental illnesses and so on and think that all this is the other person's fault or in the person's sin nature.
If he is a lay preacher who has had real life experience and is going through counseling classes and has seen what abuse does and how abusers work, and has been through some issues himself, then he is more likely to be understanding to the above mentioned people and to know that some people really do have mental/medical issues that make them act certain ways and that it's not always them deciding to sin because of their sin nature.
And I believe that there may be some really gifted people who come from a wild background, have the big degrees, and experiences of genuine compassion towards others because of what they've been through.
Personally, I am terrified to go to preachers and don't get as much enjoyment out of churches and afraid to go to some people (even in the secular world) for help because of some stuff that has happened to me and I have a hard time trusting anymore and am triggered of memories when certain verses or words are used in life. I am afraid of events happening again or worse. That is why I prefer the annonimity of the internet. But I am taking into consideration if I should use the opportunity someone on yahoo answers has given me to communicate with a female minister, go to a male minister 4 hours round way, or to just go back to a female domestic abuse counselor who seemed to really want to help me. Because otherwise I am still in agony, fear, despair, and what else do I have to lose other than time. The only One I can trust on to be just is my Creator. When a woman was caught doing wrong instead of saying for her to be stoned, Jesus protected her from the men who truthfully accused her, condemned and judged her.

I would ask for advice to help my mentally challenged son and my son with medical illnesses (2 different teens). I am lost sometimes in how to help him and even though they don't have all the answers, sometimes a church leader can help me become stronger to find the answers or at least be more open minded to them.

Religious and spiritual issues only. I believe ministers should stay within their area of training when giving advice and direction. The last time I went to my minister for guidance I asked if plaid pants made my fanny look big, and he assured me that they didn't. Although, I did hear a faint snicker and giggle as I walked away.

My pastor is a former Marine, with a doctrine in religion, and is a licensed mediator and family counselor. So I feel he has sufficient maturity, education, and experience to help me and my family with the issues of morality and family relations.
I leave the mental illness issues to individuals that have years of education in this discipline.

...I would ask for guidance and prayer...specifics on any given issue depends on the leaders experience and/or education...my brother, for instance, is a Dr. of Clinical Psychology and is senior pastor of a large Baptist church in New England...he counsels many and has the knowledge and letters after his name to do so...but if this isn't the case, then the leader does, hopefully, possess referral info and has the heart of share God in the process

Can't hurt to ask him anything you want so long as you do not base your thoughts/decisions based only on what he or she says. I think they are good source to find out what they Bible (or whatever religious doctrine you prescribe to) says about the topic.

Ask your Pastor if he is really on a true religion or not. Whether he is following the teachings in the bible. If he will get angry with you for asking, he is a false pastor who is on a false relgion.
