Some are, some aren't - but you don't really have time to check that out if you are in danger of being attacked. The best defense is to make your presence known. Have you ever heard of bear bells? They are little metal bells that you fasten to your hiking staff and it makes a noise as you are hiking along. Bears will normally stay out of range if they know you are coming. You could also have a radio going - although that disturbs the pristine nature of the wilderness - but it does help protect you from predators.

Q: How can you tell what kind of bear it is?
A: Climb a tree. If it climbs up after you and kills you, it's a black bear. If it knocks the tree down and kills you, it's a grizzly bear.
So no, hiding in a tree is NOT the best way. If it is a black bear, make a lot of noise while backing away, try to scare it. Grizzlies don't scare easily, and they rather enjoy mauling people, so with them the best is to roll into a ball on the ground, on your knees with your head tucked in and your hands clasped behind your neck.

When I had a near bear scare there was no place to hide. I was walking on a path with a steep drop on one side (on a mountain) and the bear on a ledge above me on the other side about 10 - 15 ft. away.
I followed the park instructions; I didn't make eye contact, I spoke softly and walked by slowly. Scared the s*** out of me and the minute I had turned a bend I ran like hell about halfway down that mountain.
I'd much rather view them from the inside of a vehicle.

You can't hide from a bear!! You stand very still and if it charges you roll up into a ball covering the back of your neck and pray to the powers that be he doesn't kill you! Only cubs climb trees!

Having just come back from the mother land ( canada) i had the chance to be face to face with a black bear.
You are supposed to make yourself as big as possible, talking loudly, making noises. Dont climb a tree as they will climb up too. If you have food on your throw it at them, http://bears.mnr.gov.on.ca/outdoors.html

I live in Arizona, so there aren't any trees or bears. But...
Whenever I see a Canadian, I duck behind a cactus and hide.
Does that count?

London UK, with our police force they have no chance of getting you, and if the police don't respond to your call, then a cab driver will put them to sleep for you, all you need to do is entice them into the back of a black taxi and slip out the other door

Canadian bears can't get to Spain, because the Atlantic Ocean is in the way.
