I would like to buy- cash out- a dwelling. I have a very small budget ($10,000. +/-) and 4 kids. I've heard of people buying kits for barns or even very large storage sheds and repurposing them for homes. If anyone has suggestions of something that would work for this, I'd love to hear your ideas... websites of people who have done so successfully would be super, too...

Straw-bale homes are a popular alternative in New Mexico. Highly insulating and made by hand. Might be a bad idea if you get a lot of rain.

i saw this thing on nat geo once and thought it was pretty cool. the owner of the homes used second-hand shipping containers. they're pretty flexible too; weld two together, and voila, u have a bigger room. stack one on top of the other, and u get 2 floors. plus, the cuboid design makes for a contemporary-modern look if used correctly and creatively. u can get a variety of configurations to suit ur wants and needs. just make sure u get the metal treated.
